Hello,

Like many of you scheduled to have a LEEP procedure, I have been following these boards closely to gain information about the procedure.

It is 4:00 eastern time, I had my LEEP done 5 1/2 hours ago and want to share all of the details with you to put your minds at ease. I think that that worst part of any surgical procedure is the "unknown".

* I arrived at the hospital at 8:30 am to begin the prep process for surgery.
* As soon as I arrived, the nurse had me change in to a gown, and little booties for my feet.
* The nurse took my vital signs, asked me tons of questions about my health history and hooked me up to an IV. I need antibiotics any time I even get my teeth cleaned as I have mitral valve prolaps....so that and the sedative was the reason that I needed the IV.
* The anesthesiologist came in and talked to me again about my health history, and we also talked about the sedative at length. I don't even like to drink because I hate that fuzzy feeling in my head, and I hate to be NOT in control so I was very hesitant about the drugs. I decided to go ahead and have the drugs once I was in the operating room....and I am so glad that I did.
* I then waited for what seemed like forever for them to take me back to the OR. When they did it was about 10:25 am.
* As soon as I lied on the table, the nurses and OR techs hooked me up to every imaginable thing...nothing hurt at all. It was very cold in there and they covered me with warm blankets which felt really good.
* The anesthesiologist started the sedative drip and I was feeling wonderful in seconds. I did not really fall asleep and was chatting with the folks in the room but I did have my eyes closed. I remember absolutely nothing of the procedure except that my thighs hurt from being in the stirrups.
* As soon as the Dr. turned off the drip I began to wake up. At that time it was 10:45 so the procedure took a little over 15 min. and that included the prep time.
* I was asked to sit up which was a little hard because I was still kind of sleepy, but again, alert.
* I got in a wheel chair and they took me back to a day surgery recovery room.
* I was situated in a reclining chair, given juice and crackers and my husband came in to sit with me.
* By 11:15 they were removing my IV, and allowing me to get dressed. At 11:30, I was getting in to my car for the short trip home.
* I had NO pain, NO bleeding and was feeling just fine!
* I came home and had about a two hour nap....more than anything I think that the relief of having it all behind me made me sleep!!
* Now, just a few hours later I took three over the counter Tylenol for mild cramping and had a bit to eat.
* IT IS OVER!!
* Still have a bit of anxiety over the pathology report that is yet to come, but overall, just glad that it went so well.

...Please do not hesitate to reply with any questions at all, I wuold be more than happy to answer them all!

Thank you SO much for that information! I am getting mine done on Monday (June 2nd) and I am a nervous wreck (see my Post!). Let me know how the healing process goes...the discharge (how heavy, etc), cramping (how servere)and anything else you think I should know. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif
I am due for my period the next day, so I am curious how heavy my period will be, but we'll see. I just can't wait until this is over with! I am getting married in 7 weeks, so I am glad that they can get this done now so I can enjoy the planning!
Also, I noticed that you mentioned "your husband"... did your doctor say if you can pass this back and forth? I am just wondering because obviously I am planning on having sex with my loved one for the rest of my life and I am curious how this will effect my health in terms of dysplasia, etc.
Thanks for your help and info..and GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR RESULTS! Keep me updated http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi,
I asked my Dr. the very same question about passing this back and forth with my husband and she explained it like this....because HPV is a virus, it will always be present whether or not you have sex. What the LEEP does is remove the cells, not the virus. So, it has nothing to do with intercourse as to whether or not the cells come back. Unfortunately, we all did get this from intercourse but there is really nothing we can do now to make it go away! I do think that maintaining your health and your immunity as much as possible is the best thing that you can do. From here on our I really plan on taking good care of myself!

Anyway, I am at the 24 hour mark after my surgery and I feel great. There is just a tiny bit of a pink watery discharge, and no cramping at all.

You will do just fine....and congrats on your wedding!!

Becky
