Hi Dragon!

I'm sorry your having trouble sleeping!

This might sound a little stupid because your manic but have you tried exercising at least 3 hours before you go to bed. It helps get rid of the extra energy. Do it at least 3 hours ahead because it can back fire on you if you don't.

Another stupid but effective idea is warm milk or chamomile tea. They aren't a cure all. I think half the trick of these two is force you to slow down and drink the warming liquid before you go to bed. No Regular Tea!

Have you tried meditation tapes or soothing music? They are available just about anywhere.

Try getting in bed early and reading for an hour or so. It forces you to slow down.

These are the only suggestions I have right now. Try one or a combination they are simple but maybe they'll help!

Love,

Jamie

Hi Dragon,
Jamie has some great idea's and it never hurts to try them all if necessary.
Another few natural alternatives is a nice hot shower or bath.
Natural supplement Melatonin,
There's always over the counter benedryl
For me turning on the TV a real boring show and it's like the TV distracts
my thoughts of I cant sleep and next thing I know Im asleep.
Sweet dreams, K

Hi Jamie and Kiehn,

Thanks for the replies! I do excersise 3 times a week. I am involved with the Special Olympics powerlifting team. Those kids wear me out...but still not enough to sleep. I have tried the warm milk, the Benedryl, Nyquil, some herbal pills, I read before I go to bed, sometimes I read in a hot bath. I can usually get to sleep, I just can't stay asleep. argh!!

I guess I am going to try the chamomile tea, the Melatonin, and the soothing tapes. I am willing to try anything and everything. Hopfully I will be back to normal soon.

Thanks so much for your help, and if you think of anything else, please let me know!

Have a great day,
Dragon

Dragon -

All of the suggestions given here are excellent, and I commend you all.

Personally, a ripping orgasm would help me - but convince my spouse of that.

Conversely, I've heard a bit of Risperdal can help (not a lot). I would recommend avoiding more meds, but Ambien is supposedly helpful. It backfired on me the third time I used it.

On a more practical note - purging one's mind of nagging concerns is essential sometimes to relax and stay that way. I had horrible bouts of insomnia in my 20's - until I started keeping a stenographer's book on my bedstand. Then, before going to bed - I'd write down EVERYTHING that I needed to address the next day or in the immediate future. IF I awoke with ANY concern - I'd write it down at the awakening (so I didn't have to mull over in trying not to forget about it).

That really worked wonders for me, at that time. As I got older, I made modifications, and my over-sink-mirror resembles a community bulletin board. However, now I tend to awaken over gastric discomforts, and NOT so much over bothersome concerns. But, once I'm fully awake (transitting to and from the toilet), THEN I just tend to lay wide awake.

My Pdoc (yes, I own him, NOT) suggested that once you're awake for over 30 minutes and cannot drift back, then it might be best to get out of bed and do something (returning if you tire and relax). I go onto my computer and make ridiculous postings while C-SPAN rattles in the background. ;)

Lack of sleep is my Boogie-Man, too. It exacerbates all the rest of life's problems.

there is a tea called sleepytime tea that has chammomile and a few other relaxing herbs. that with some melatonin usually works for me for falling asleep.

i know how frusterating it is not being able to stay asleep though. after about two weeks of that i usually just take a day off, take a zyprexa the night before, and that usually puts me back on shedule (zyprexa makes me feel drunk for a day or two days, thats why i take the day off) also, try keeping a regualr bedtime and regular wake time. it takes getting used to, but its helped me tremndously. also yoga helps. its excercise and meditation all in one.

oh the other thing is eating turkey, bananas, and yogurt before bed time is supposed to help. each of these has some nutrients/chemicals that are supposed to help with sleep.

other things to think about are room temp (a fairly cool room is better, even if you need more blankets) and light in your room, and a comfortable bed. also, make sure you dont have clutter or mess in your bedroom. sounds silly, but its true. keep your bedroom only for sleeping and sex, no reading or tv, no brain activity, basically...

anyways, hope some of this helps! most of it has helped me out at one point or another, so hopefully it will help you.

sweet dreams.........

Kiehn,

I have tried trazodone, that was the first thing they gave me. I gave me terrible migraines so I couldn't take it anymore. Then he gave me flexaril, and after 3 to four days it didn't work, plus i would wake up in 4 or 5 hours. It starts to get expensive paying all the co-payments and meds so I gave up. Thought I would try the natural way! I guess it isn't so easy!

Weasel,

Thanks for you reply too! I really agree with the cool room. That does help, just not enough sometimes. I am gonna try the bananas and yogurt. Yum!

Thanks again to both of you!
