I am looking for natural replacements to prescription anti anxiety medication ( currently on xanax )
I have read a great deal on GABA,and I see where it is now sold as a supplement. However, I have also read that in it's present form, it cannot cross the " brain barrier" and actually get to where it needs to be to bring about the desired effect.
Yet at the same time, theres often glowing testimony from those who have tried it.
I also have incorporated b complex vitamins, flaxseed oil capsules and calcium and magnesium supplements, which have helped.
I think I tried St Johns Wort before and didn't care for the flushed feeling it gave me...and I thought Kava was a relaxing herb, but in the same way that alcohol can " relax" you - and it actually is a stimulant?
Anyone tried the GABA products?

5-HTP will do the same job but crosses the brain barrier VERY EASILY. google it to find out more.

As with so many things . . . there are probably individual differences. Personally, I find GABA does much more for anxiety than 5-HTP.

For those who take GABA my questions are:
1. How much does you need to take daily to feel the effect?
2. How long does it take to have an effect?
3. What exactly do you feel from taking it- can you describe it?
4. If there a specific time to take it when it works best?
Thanks

i've been reading on the internet that the amino acid L-theanine increases the activity of naturally occuring GABA in the brain. a good source of the amino acid is green tea. found it through a site about the product "seredyn". check it out to find out more.

apparantly L-theanine stimulates the production of alpha brain waves, calming the body whilst producing a feeling a relaxed awareness. before you ask about the caffeine, apparantly the catechins in the green tea combine with the caffeine in the water to lessen its effects dramatically. also, if you do an initial brew for 45 seconds, this removes 80& of the caffene. you then rebrew it inanother cup to get near caffeine-free green tea but with the benefits of L-theanine. the flavour and aroma isn't affected either.

1. How much does you need to take daily to feel the effect?I take about 300 mg. usually one but sometimes twice a day. If you are getting headaches, you are taking too much.
2. How long does it take to have an effect? Can't really say, I take it routinely, not in response to stress/anxiety.
3. What exactly do you feel from taking it- can you describe it?I just remain calmer than I might have otherwise been.
4. If there a specific time to take it when it works best?
Amino acid supplements are supposed to be take away from meals. I take GABA midmorning . . . and midafternoon if I take it a second time.

Take picamilon! it has gaba and niacin in it, niacin is a vitamin B and crosses the brain barrier! it brings gaba with it so it works pretty well!! L-thanine is too mild u wont get the same effect. Some people say its great but for people with real anxiety issues and for people that dont get the placebo affect it isnt that strong.
You can get niacin and gaba and take them seperatly though as picamillon is chemically bonded
