Does anyone here know much about flash thoughts? I sometimes wonder if I have them but I can't find any information about them:P I've looked at the library for books, I've taken a look through some old psyc text books, searched the internet. Nothing terribly useful...
I only get them when I got to bed however. I took some time to write them down a while back if you wand to know. Does anyone know what causes them or can be done about them? I'm not sure, they're not really fast like you'd expect flash thoughts to be. They're in real time and they stop if I open my eyes and sit up.
Anyways, I took some time to record them a few nights ago if you're interested...
On the 19th of January I heard this in my head:
A girl said "Did you just wait for a normal year?"
a man said "Graham! Did you start guttin' the stick last night?"
The next night...:
A man said "You showed me naked right now!"
"Unzomable!"
And my geology professor said something but I only understood the word "books"
Someone asked a question that I didn't understand
the answer was "Him SPITE seeing!"
some talking, I only heard the end of it "... when you're a murderer at UNB"
"You can do it too"
"The sea level's not rising"
"That's everything else"
"I need to let the credit huse"
On Jan 21st I heard:
"NOOOOOOO!!!"
"You just do it like this"
Then I decided to write down things other then voices, like sounds and images
*The sound of a broom falling over onto the floor*
*Incomprehencible speech*
Devil faces
Devils on a string
Talk of gold and homosexuality. I didn't understand anything other then those two words though...
*A missle howling*
I saw a jet flying overhead
Jan 22nd I heard:
ducks quaking
My supervisor tony say "Josh! Hurry the mother ******!)
The song "I found my thrill"
And I saw:
A mitten waving
a harbour
The race car tire being changed
A child looked under a table and saw a swirling blue vortex
Soldiers marching with a flag
A woman wistled at a baseball game
And then I got the song Blue by Eiffle 65 stuck in my head -_-
After that I was sick of writing and I tried to go to sleep
and then I heard
"TEACHER!!"
The only reason I really think of this is cuz last night I heard my friend yell
"Say somethin!"

I always called voice type thoughts like that instrusive thoughts and wondered
if they were a combo somewhere between OCD and schophrenzia. Maybe a search
in one of those three areas might help you. If you find out let us know.
Thanks, K

I've looked up stuff on schizophrenia and ocd. They sound a lot more severe then anything I've ever experienced ^_^' Maybe I have a mild case of one of their cousins *lol*
Also, I've heard talk of them being caused by an excess of vitamin B12 on some other posts. I don't really know what that is or what would cause it (certain types of foods, maybe?). I'll try to find out, and then I'll post about it. I've noticed lots of people asking about them

I went to the drug store today and asked a pharmasist if an excess of Vitamin B12 would cause something like that and he looked at me like I had a second head... so I guess that's not the problem *lol*

Run, don't walk to a qualified psychiatrist or psychologist, they can help you and diagnose what mental illness you have, and suggest some treatment or meds for your problem.

maybe i'm being stupid, but isn't that just a form of a dream? If you say you only get them when you are about to go to sleep, maybe you are more asleep than you think you are.

Hi, I never really heard voices in my head but just have alot of crazy thoughts passing thru, but they're usually of gross things or something like that. I have severe OCD so that does sound a little like it. Does it bother you really bad? It seems like to have an understanding of it, like knowing they're just stange things passing thru your mind. Also, I do not know about the vitamin B theory, but vitamin B6 does give you some crazy dreams! So I wonder.....

I have to agree with Tropical fish girl about you being asleep when you hear these voices. There are actually 4 stages of sleep. The first stage is very light sleep, where your body is actually going to sleep, but you feel as if you are still awake. It is at this time you will hear noises and voices, maybe see images, and you can be very easily awakened at this point. I think you are just in stage one and don't know it.
Insurance will pay for a sleep test to track this for you. Only if these voices are causing sleep disturbances or something. Ask your primary doc.

That's what everyone else says too:P "You're just asleep" But I'm sure that i'm not.
I'll sit with a pen and paper and just write them down and I still have the record in the morning.
Also, back in the fall they would terrify me 0_0 I'd "see" a killer in my mind's eye and just go into a panic 0_0 I'd get up and pace around. I'd want to check my locks but I'd be afraid that if I opened the door to my room he'd be standing on the other side. Thank goodness that doesn't happen anymore tho:P
They happen in the day too, only they're less common but they seem more... real? Like the other day, I thought I head to doorbell ring, and when I got up to walk to the door there was a spider web infront of me. But just for second, then it was gone. I still don't know if the doorbell actually rung or not too:P No one else in the house heard it...
I guess they don't really cuase me much problems anymore, they just startle me now and then:P

That happens to me from time to time. I was just diagnosed with OCD. I'll ask my doctor about it next visit. I know it's not schizaphrenia - because those voices talk TO you - these are just passing voices - all different people - I've heard that many time and even woken up because I've heard my name screamed - only to realize it was in my head. My sister says it happens to her sometimes. I have also heard that it can happen from certain sleep disorders. Narcalepsey is one.
Hope this helps

If you were in a movie you would probably be a psychic who ends up solving some ancient mystery. But you are not and I'm not making light of your situation. I'm sure it's not fun to go through. B vitamins effect the nervous system so yes that is a possibility. Maybe you already have, but start with the obvious. Check your diet. Caffeine? Sugar? Artificial colors? Food allergies? Meditate to control and calm your mind. Exercise. Yoga. Don't watch tv at night. Try natural remedies, herbs and teas for relaxation. And check with your doctor but make them spend time with all the posibilities instead of writing a quick perscription. Again, maybe you've been there, done that but I didn't see it posted so I thought I'd mention it. In the meantime keep writing. Good luck.

Just curious how old you are? Any major changes or stresses going on in your life? BTW in Schizophrenia the voices can talk to you, but you can also hear voices, noises, conversations ect.

Kim,
Can you elaborate on your above statement about the "gross things" flashing through your head sometimes. Since I was little I've experienced a weird phenomenon. Just as I'm drifting off to sleep and I'm in that in-between twilight state, sometimes I feel caught as a prisoner being forced to watch a fast moving picture show of all kinds of horrible things...mostly images, no voice at all, but when I shake myself out of it I am often trembling because the images are all evil and violent in nature. I have OCD too, as well as bi-polar depression for most of my life. I was always very frightened by that, and I never had any one else talk to about it.
Any response would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

i have these things too, except all throughout the day at any time really, and sometimes they can go on for a really long time. they're like hallucinations, but in your mind and you can't confuse them with the real world, and they're like intrusive thoughts but just..not. gah, its so confusing. i would be interested to know if anyone finds out more about it.
ps. i should mention that i have been diagnosed with ocd before but do not believe this to be my major problem, and am now thought to have "obsessive compulsive tendencies". furthermore, i do have some of the symptoms of schizophrenia but have never been diagnosed with it officially. so i don't know

That sums it up really well^_^
yeah, I know they're not indtrusive thoughts. I'd get those too sometimes, and they're not similar...
I talked to psyc student the other week, but he didn't really give me a straight answer as to what they are.
He said they were probably related to either severe depression, a phychotic break, or some kind of developping psychotic disorder. But they're gone now. They started out as just hearing the voices in my mind, then as time when I'd see or hear things for real, but they were almost always animals. A bird singing, a mouse squeaking, a spider web, newts crawling around on the sidewalk... But none of these things happen anymore. Strange... Not that i miss them or anything -_-

I experience these too... I never knew they were called "flash thoughts", but that name seems very appropriate.
I talked to my therapist about it, and she said its not really anything for me to worry about. I'm not schizophrenic. However, I am OCD, and racing thoughts (which are usually coherent, or form some sort of "chain" of thought). Sometimes, these racing thoughts are similar to what you call flash thoughts. It will be like random movie lines being thought by me, but without my actively thinking them!
Have you ever studied for a test for so long that you dreamt about the material at night?? I think if your brain is getting tired, and is little your unconcious mind sort of "peek through" so to speak, then that is when you usually have these thoughts. At least thats how I think of it for me. I notice sometimes these flash thoughts being influenced by books I had just read, even though I wasn't actively thinking them.
Want to know something weird? I get these after I've been playing solitaire on the computer for a long time!! I'm only half-focused on the game, really just worried about playing the game the "right way" (thats the *game* for me - I'm even ocd about solitaire!), so it doesn't take a lot of thought. I guess the rest of my mind has time to wander.
I have a bad headache right now, so I hope this makes sense.

I get these sometimes right before I fall asleep too. Mostly auditory rather than visual. It's really cool that you were able to remember them and write them down. A few that I can remember: I've heard a woman's voice talking conversationally in another language in my right ear, a truck commercial that kept looping and getting louder and louder, visions of freaky things like black shrouded mannequins and strange looking people. Usually when I get them and they're very quick flowing I'll go right into sleep paralysis which can be pretty interesting too if you can stay lucid through it. If not, it can be pretty darn terrifying because they're difficult to wake up from since you think you're already wide awake. Do you ever get sleep paralysis? I used to get this more when I was a teen and I honestly didn't know what to think it was. My friend used to tease me that it was actually voices of real people and I was tuning into the cosmos or it was caused by aliens. LOL. Later I asked my parents about it and they both said they had the exact same thing and so did a lot of people I have talked to, so I guess it's just a freaky sleep/brain thing...

I am a very spiritual person and do believe that we all have past lives. Maybe your having flashbacks into your past life. Cause alot of your things you are hearing seem so bizarre for this time period. And it only happens when you are in a very relaxed state like when your going to bed because thats when your subconsious comes in which is where all your past memories live. That is my opinion. You may want to really check into Sylvia Brownes book The Other Side and Back. Maybe that will give you a different perspective. Or a past life regression hynotherapy. GOD BLESS

I don't hear voices during the day, and I'm not schizophrenic, but the other night I was lying there almost asleep, and I hear, "Richard!" really loudly! It woke me up! (I don't know a Richard.) It was strange.
