My wife has been diagnosed with significant bone loss, and her GP doc is not very helpful. We are seeking a specialist, but do not know what type of doc to look for. Can anyone help with what type of specialist is best for finding out the cause of the loss and hopefully how best to treat it? Or the name of such a doc in Florida. Thanks for any help.

I'm surprised that the GP can't give you a referral. But anyways, I'm seeing an internal medicine doctor with a speciality in bone density problems.

I don't where you are in Florida but if you are near a teaching hospital as in Jacksonville or Miami, call and ask for someone who is doing research on Osterporosis. I am going to a doctor at Washington university and she is actually doing research so is aware of all the latest information.

Thanks for the info. How did you find someone who is a specialist in the field...via internet, yellow pages, etc?

I think you were asking me about how I found a specialist. I went to a teaching hospital ambulatory clinics of Internal Medicine - they have Specialist on staff to treat Osteoporosis and assigned me a doctor. It was very easy.

The National Osteoporosis Foundations gives some guidelines for finding a doctor who's primary interest is in treating osteoporosis:

I would think that with all the retirees who have moved to FL that there would be a high interest amongst doctors there in treating this problem.

Try the NOF or the ISCD web sites.
