View Full Version : Total Hip Replacement Questions.....

I had a total hip replacement back in August. While the arthritis pain that pushed me into this surgery is gone, I still have discomfort doing some movement.

If anyone out there who has had this proceedure can take a minute and reply to this I'd really appreciate it.

The situation is this....I'm walking 99% normal. I have an "ache" on the actual hip joint and I am NOT doing stairs well, getting into bed, stepping over things. I'm experiencing pain in the upper most part of the thigh. Almost where your "underpants" meet the thigh.

My doctor has taken xrays and says the implanted hip is seated perfectly. Possibly I have some bursitis. I'm ok with the bursitis part. But why the pain when I lift the leg "up" for say, stairs.

Any suggestions??? Thanks.

hi there, i had a total hip done on my left side in 1997 when i was 29 due to avasular neucrosis from being on prednisone...i was in the worst pain ever ....finally after the surgery, things got better, but i always had pain down my leg where the stem is located...and also in the groin area.and at times it would even pop out and then pop itself back in, OUCH..so in 2003, i was in soooooooo much pain again, the MRI showed the ball joint there or socket thingy was too small and i would have a to have a revision done and a larger ball put in..since then, i still have the thigh (stem) pain and discomfort in the groin area..but nothing like before..now being back on prednisone since april of 2004 with the lovely DX of Systemic Lupus, avasular neucrosis has now set in my right hip as well..this time they are suggesting a core decompression..another OUCH....i should mention i have oseteo-artritis in my right knee and have had 8 scopes done since 2003...and to find out today after yet ANOTHER MRI, there are tears all through the meniscus area again..but they wont do a knee replacement saying too young..i was 29 when i had my first hip..im sick of having scopes and surgeries all together, you know? i also have a problem with stairs and lifting my leg and god forbid if i hit my foot or miss the stair and hit that replaced leg..OMG, the pain...thanks for listening to all this...i wish you well..

Hi. My husband had both hips replaced and he had the same problems you're experiencing. I remember the OS and PT telling him he had to make sure he did his exercises as prescribed. These are EXTREMELY important to strengthen the muscles and tendons and everything else.
It can take up to a year to heal from hip replacement surgery.
I know what my husband went through. It was pure agony for him. You should see him now. He still has his aches and pains from time to time. But he's SOOO MUCH better now.

I know exactly what you are all talking about. I just got my left hip replaced the end of November and I am wondering why the pain is still there. I realize it is not the same pain and I have a WHOLE LOT more flexibility than I did before. I'm relatively young too (only 46) and I am quite active. I find that if I do the exercising it gets better but if I go too far it can go backwards. I have a muscle stim machine and I do that when it gets bad along with heat as well. Are you still limping too? I did not have a limp before but I do now (just when it hurts). I don't have any suggestions for you, just sympathy. Hang in there and keep exercising!

First of all, thanks to everyone for replying.... :)

hip2it - No I'm not limping. I had a slight limp up until about a month ago. But since the soreness in the actual hip is gone I'm walking very well. You're limp will go away like mine did once the soreness/pain is gone. :)

It seems that the anti-inflamatories the surgeon put me back on took care of that constant "ache" on the side where the incision is that I was complaining about. But that pain at the top of the thigh when I try to do straight leg lifts, stairs or just stepping over something is still there. I'm still doing my exercises....home and at PT. When I go to see the surgeon next week I'll let him know what's going on.

But on the positive side I'm definately mobile again and that horrible arthritis pain is gone. I can walk distances and stand without pain which is something I couldn't do!

I'll let you all know what the Dr. tells me next week.

Hi All
My Father just had a THR, about month and a half ago. He would like to know how long it takes to get back to daily life. He can get in and out of bed on his own now. But he would like to know when he will be able to put on his own shoes, bend to put on his pants,etc... He is getting very restless. Can not sit still. We have to tell him to sit down. Any thoughts?
