I keep reading threads about it, but mainly nothing that says exactly what it is.
Can someone explain it, because it seems like its something that every female should know about. Thanks.

A leep is a diagnostic procedure as well as a treatment. They take use a thin wire loop electrode to cut away areas. They basically are scraping and cauterizing areas of the cervix that through the colposcopy have shown to have abnormal cells. Typically you are given a local anasthetic to numb the cervix prior. It takes only about 15 minutes and is usually done in the office.

I have just had the leep procedure done. Tis was my second time with displaysia, the first time I had cryo done, then it came back. So they deceided to do the leep procedure. It is not a bad procedure let me explain:
You go to the office like a regular exam, they put a bigger speculm in so they have "more room" so to speak of. Then they give you the regular pap test before they do leep. Then they paint the cervix with viniger so they can see the lesions with the microscope. After that they put some numbing (local) on the cervix. Then they put a sticky pad on your thigh to make the electric loop work properly. The loop is a tiny wire that "burns" the displaysia lesions off. It is not as painful as it sounds. Only takes about 15 - 20 min. Then after they take off what they need to, they put a special solution on there to stop the bleeding. Hopefully this will give you a little more info about the procedure.

LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure)
I had a leep 5 - 6 years ago. It is a metal wired loop and it is used to burn away abnormal cells on the cervix (also known as dysplasia).
They will put a sticky pad on your leg (to ground you from the electricity). Your cervix will be numbed and then they will perform the procedure. After the procedure the doctor will put some brown stuff on the wounds in order to help it heal (iodine or something of the sort - I forgot exactly).
The most painful part for me was when they numbed my cervix for the first time. Afterwards, you won't feel much. After the procedure you'll have staining and cramping. Important thing is to keep an eye on the bleeding and make sure it doesn't get out of control. Your dr. will give you a list of things (what to do and what NOT to do). No baths, pools, sex, tampons etc... my doc made me wait 3 months (90 days) before attempting to do any of the following.
If you have any questions ... I'll come back to check the board.
Good luck and be positive.
