View Full Version : strange eye symptoms

am a 40 year old, healthy female. About 3 years ago during a routine eye exam, it was noted that the pressures in my eyes were high - 25 & 23. I have a strong family history of glaucoma (mother and sister), but my optometrist decided to just follow me for a while because there was no damage to the optic nerve and the test for peripheral vision was quite good. Anyway, I recently went back to him for an eye exam and my pressures are now 28 & 25 and he is referring me to an ophthalmologist. Over the last year I have developed two new symptoms that are strange:
1. When lying in bed (in the dark) and watching TV, if I get up to go to the restroom I am completely blind in my left eye (always my left, never my right. My vision returns as soon as I go back to the TV - it's like my pupil in that eye can't adjust very quickly.
2. If walking from a completely dark room to a room w/ some light (like at nighttime - walking into a room w/ a nightlite) I have flashes of light in the peripheral vision in both eyes - these flashes are vertical - they seem to go from my eye to the floor.

Here's my questions: Could these things be related to glaucoma? What other eye problems/diseases cause these types of symptoms?

I am just looking for information so that I can go to my ophthalmology appointment as informed as possible.

Thanks so much for any anwers that can be provided.
