I have just been diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia first the doc just gave me pain killers co-codomol 200mg 2 every 6 hours these worked for about 2 weeks then stopped working now i am on 500mg of co-codomol 2 every 6 hours and also carbamazepine 100mg one in morning and one at night i still get pain usually at night but i was wondering if anyone knows how long a person can take pain killers and still be safe i really don't like taking pain killers all the time but with this i have to i have no other choice as i could not put up with the pain.

hi i am on pain meds and muscle relaxers also and sometimes i find that for me if i take alot of them they stop working because my body get use to them so i have to put up with the pain for a little while about 3or 4 days and then go back taking them. what scares me the most is that they can be habit forming . hope you have a great.mb

little miss,
My original dx was TN, neuro says it is Atypical Facial Pain. Anyway your dose of carbamazepine seems low. That was my starting dose and I am now up to 300mg 2xdaily,raised over a 1 month period. With this dosage I do not need the pain meds(which didn't help me). Still get some tingling, but that is much better than that awful pain that I had. Best wishes to you.

Hi K9,
This was the first time I had pain like this so my doc has started me on a low dose which seems to have worked this time, i think the more often it returns the meds will have to go up as i have read that each time it comes back the pain is stronger and lasts longer anyway i am pain free just now thank god.

little miss,
I' am so happy for you! I hate taking this much med as it is giving me some dizzines and nausea. I hope this keeps it at bay for you. Best wishes for a pain free future. K9

Hi everyone.

I also have bilateral Trigeminal Neauralgia and i have had 4 brain sergerys to rid of the pain but nothing worked.

But i have it on both sides and on all six branches. The Dr's think i have it so extreme thats why the sergerys didnt work.

So please dont get discouraged about the sergerys.
You can stay on the pain meds a very long time. I have had TN for 12 yrs and i've been on oxycontin and oxyir for a very long time.

Been on pain meds in general for about 10yrs.

Take care

Shannon
