I am new to these boards and have a question. I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes a year ago and have been controlling my blood glucose with diet and exercise. Yesterday I came down with the stomach flu (vomiting and diarrhea). I took my blood level yesterday and it was 133. When I got up this morning, it was still 133. Can anyone explain to me why the level is so high and what I can do to bring it down. Thanks for your help!!

I'm sure someone else here can give you a more detailed answer but I do know that blood sugars can go whacky when you're sick. We've been given some literature about it and it says that even if you aren't eating you can possibly expect to see higher numbers when you're ill. Since you're prediabetic and I'm assuming not taking any meds then I would just sit tight and wait it out. Those numbers are in the diabetic range but nothing that you would need to be seen for right away. You may find that they go back to normal once you're feeling better. If not then it's probably time to get checked but just give it a few days and see how you are. Good luck and hope you feel better.

Linda's absolutely right. Illness puts a great deal of stress on your metabolism, and it's not uncommon for people with diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance to run higher bg's than normal during the flu or other viral illness. In fact, people on insulin frequently have to take more insulin even if they're sick to their stomach and unable to eat!

In the grand scheme of things, 133 isn't all that high, especially if it's only for a few days. But do stay on top of it and make sure it goes back down when you're feeling better.

Thank you both for your reply. My numbers are down, but still a little high this morning (111). I really appreciate your responses!
