My GP has referred me to a rheumatologist because I have classic RA symtoms (onset about 7 months ago) I have swelling, burning, pain in my hands and positive Rheumatoid Factor.
Here is my problem: I have had herpes for 5 years. Only one outbreak in that time. Since the onset of the RA symptoms, I have had almost non-stop outbreaks of herpes, despite being on suppressive medication. I don't see the rheumatologist for another 2 weeks and I'm wondering if RA can cause herpes to flare up? I have read that some herpes viruses in the herpes family (like epstein barr) have been implicated in causing RA, but I'm wondering if the RA can cause the flare ups and my unresponsiveness to the anti-virals.
Btw: I've been tested for all other stds, HIV etc. and I am negative. No other health probs except for the RA. I am female, 27 years old.
