Ok, back at the age of 17 I had an abortion. I was young and got pregnant by a guy I was just dating. I later moved on and had a 7 yr relationship with another guy and never got pregnant. I just figured he was infertile because I had gotten pregnant before. Now I am back with the guy I dated before and was pregnant by. We are engaged and ttc. It has been 4 months and nothing. He has a child already from a previous relationship so I know he is fertile. Could I no longer be infertile because of the abortion? I get my yearly physicals with pap and my family practioner tells me I should be able to get pregnant. Should I wait a whole year before I go and get further testing?

Maybe this should be discussed with your doctor, i was told to wait a year before they could test but seeing as you have only been trying with this guy for 4 months im not sure they can do anything at this time. Its also an idea to get hold of Taking Charge Of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler as this will give you a better insight to ovulation and charting, it could be that you are fertile you are just missing the right time to catch, its worth borrowing from the library.

Good luck :)

I guess it all depends. My niece got pregnant at 17 and had an abortion. She later married at age 20 and a year later gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl.
My best friend got pregnant in high school and had an abortion. She bleed for over two weeks from it and then later when she was in her 30's, she got pregnant again. It was ectopic and she lost one of her tubes. She got pregnant again and it too was ectopic. She has no tubes now and the only way she can get pregnant is by IVF.
I think the abortion she had in high school scarred her so badly it damaged her tubes.
I would definately discuss this with your doctor.

I've read (from a few anti-abortion sites) that having an abortion does effect your chances of conceiving or holding a baby. They usually state that abortions can scar your uterus

When we were young and stupid alot of my friends had to have abortions and they all now have beautiful healthy babies not one of them had any problems getting PG, infact one of them had a several abortions and she has 4 kids now. Thank god I never had to make that decsion. You just might be doing it on the wrong days. They say the window of oportunity is only 12-36 hours.

Most doctors won't do any testing until you have been trying for a year, so unless you lie to them and tell them you have been trying for a year you will have to wait it out.

Good luck
