My doctor gave me dycyclomine for possible IBS. Does this medication constipate? because my problem is more with hard stools, spasms and irritation, and I don't want to make that worse.

I have IBS-D. I tried dicyclomine (Bentyl in US or Bentylol in Canada) and it didn't improve my symptoms at all. It made me extremely drowsy. I only took one teaspoon after dinner and I still felt like I had a two-drink buzz all day. I stopped taking it after about two weeks because I couldn't concentrate at work. One good thing about it was that it improved my eyesight! Not dramatically, just made everything a little crisper. Of course it went back to normal after I stopped taking it. Too bad!

I have IBS with constipation and I have been taking dicyclomine for over a year. I don't take it everyday- only when I get attacks of diarrhea. My gastro told me not to take it while constipated because it will make it worse. It works very well for diarrhea, but it does make you feel floaty or drowsy. The ten mg capsules have no side effects on me but the 20 mg do.

It has never constipated me...but then I have IBS-D so not much does. Dicyclomine hasn't helped me as much as the doctor promised me but a 20mg dose helps somewhat. I use it in combination with Imodium. I think Dicyclomine has a calming effect on my system.
