jan 10 i had a nerve graph on my right leg. it was the peroneal nerve. it was injured from a football injury and i have had drop foot ever since. i was wandering if anyone has had this surgery and if they knew about how long it would take to get feeling and movement back into my foot. the doctor told me from now till a year. the did two graphs. one for feeling and one for motor movement.

How long ago did you have the injury? I also have foot drop (oct 15, 03).
Nerve grafting wasn't offered as an option. The only option I was given was a postertier tibial tendon transfer which would only keep the foot in a 90 degree angle. Will you still have to wear a brace? If so, how long?
Keep us posted.
Best wishes

well i had it done jan 10 2005. Im now walking good. i had the injury april 17 2004. the doctors say that i shouldnt have to wear a brace that is if the nerve comes back. but if it doesnt then i will have to have a muscle transfer.

so if you had a nerve injury, did you ever regain anyhting? do you have the ability to feel things on the top of your foot? and if not, then was the transfer able to bring the feeling back?? how did you injure your leg??

I've not had any surgery. I don't have any feeling on the top of my foot and up the side of my leg. I injured it when I slipped in the lobby of the hospital on my way to cardiac rehab. Had a heart attack on July 8, 03 and on Sep 15, 03 I slipped and dislocated my knee, tore the ACL/LCL/PCL, broke the fibula which tore the peroneal nerve. I had 2 EMG's which indicate no regeneration. I have to wear an AFO 24/7. I am now the proud (ugh) owner of SIX foot braces. None of which can stop the nerve pain. I was told I needed to give the nerve 18 months before having the postertier tibial tendon transfer. That surgery would not repair the nerve but only lock the foot in a 90 degree angle.
What does the muscle transfer do?

to be honest with you i think you need to find a new doctor. i have tore the same ligaments also in my football injury. the doctors told me to wait only 6 months to have surgery and that was only to see if it comes back on its own. a muscle transfer means that they take some muscles from the other side of your leg and connect them into the muscles that arent funtioning. this will regain the ability to use those muscles. its a last resort sergery but what i know is that it works. im hoping i dont have to have it done because the nerve graph cost soo much. but in my opinion, u should research some more doctors and get a better opinion. im here in houston and there are two good doctors who do nerve graphs.

I don't have any muscle damage only nerve damage. I never had surgery for my ACL/LCL/PLC damage either but that was because I had recently had the heart attack. My knee is pain free even though I only have the stability of one ligament. Im aware that I will probably have trouble with the knee down the road but at this time its ok. The foot is another matter.
It sounds like you had more damage than just the nerve? Did you have any EMG's?
I saw 3 different Doctors and all told me my only surgical option was the tendon transfer. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing another dr if he tells me I have other options. Im not happy about being diabled the rest of my life.

i've had 3 emgs. 2 before surgery and one during surgery. my nerve is still connected, it just has damage to it. the muscle transfer isnt for muscle damage. all it does is transfer muscles that are powered by another nerve over to the muscles that are dead from the damaged nerve. then they combine them together so that the muscles that work will make the muscles that dont work usable again. there was a story about a skateboarder who had our same injury, and he did the muscle transfer and he can do everthing that he used to do. it was on the news awhile back. he works on scafling and has his muscle tone back. im hoping that i dont have to do that though.

Hi, th3rd 3ye. I was injured also on april 22nd, 2004 and I tore my acl/lcl/hamstring. also my p. nerve is out in my right foot just like you. I have no feeling in my right foot up to my leg below my right knee. I have had 3 surgeries now and I had the nerve graph surgery on June 9th, 2003. it has been 9 months since the surgery and the doc told me it takes 9-12 months to regenerate, Jason

they took 10 inches of nerve from the back of my right calf and then doubled it up and made it 5 inches and put it in my thigh. the nerve was stretched like a rubberband and was no longer good.

Hi Bigdog13
Im confused? Are you saying the nerve graft was stretched so much that it was no good?

no, my nerve got stretched like a rubberband when he landed on me. So the doctor had to perform nerve graph surgery where he took 10 inches of nevre from my right calf and put it in my thigh where he took out the damaged nerve, if you have any questions let me know Jason
