Hi, My son has been dx with adhd with ocd tendencies he is currently taking 20 mgs of adderall and just started celexa a week ago because he is so obsessive and fixating...the more I read about aspergers, I see a lot of traits that he has, mainly the obsessions, right now its sharks, dinosaurs and then drawing them and talking and asking the same questions about them over and over again all day. He has problems at school...he is in kindergarten and is having a REALLY HARD time switching from his obsessions to his school work....I have had him in early childhood special ed from about the age of 4. I am just so depressed about this, his teacher is having an emergency meeting with his OT teacher, Speech and even asked his last years teachers to come to try to find a way for him to learn just the basics...his physiatrist said that he should be tested for learning disabilities and everything that our dist has to offer which I am all for....help!!!! what does he sound like to you vets that have been dealing with aspergers for a while, could he also have this tooooo? This is the most loving caring kid I have ever met, he will always put a smile on my face every day. I just don't know what to do any more, I don't know what else I should be doing !!!
Thanks for reading this ...please some one help me ...I am going crazy worrying about my little man.
Thanks,
Jakeysmom

Hi
I will reply as a teacher of children with ASD and many other disabilities-OCD being one of them. It is very difficult to say without observing your son- what characteristics he displays and how he behaves in the home and learning enviornment. Just from what you have posted, I would say that yes it sounds like OCD as opposed to Aspergers, but then again....I don't know your son.
I would get the school district to evlauate him again if you believe he has been misdiagnosed. Does the sped teacher and specials agree with you? If so, you have their support to have him reevlaulted before the next IEP reeval. It sounds like the psy is all for testing. I cannot give you names of books here or sites to help you, but do the research and you will find your rights and how to get him reevaluated. He should be in a program where the teacher KNOWS what to do to help him learn regardless of his dx.
Perhaps you should look into having him placed in a different setting (it sounds like he is in public school-inclusion)? such as a collaborative or seperate setting. This is just my opinion, but as a special ed teacher....I would know what to do with your son....from my experience....and I don't work in the public school setting. Just an idea to look into. Best of luck and always trust your mommy gut...it is the most powerful form of knowing in my opinion.
