Last Wednesday I had the LEEP procedure done and since then I have had a slight discharge (which is normal) but there has also been an unplesant odor. I shouldn't have an infection since my doctor gave me antibiotics to take. Has anyone else experienced the same thing? Is having an odor normal after the procedure?

Hello! I am going to have a Leep done sometime soon. My doctor said that I will experience discharge (that could last up to the full 6 weeks for healing...Ugh) and that it may be a horrible odor. So, I would say that it is normal, but I would check with your doctor just to make sure.
Let me know how long it lasts and how the procedure and aftermath is...I am getting married in 8 weeks and this is not what I want to be dealing with. But, my fiance said that my health is more important than having sex on our honeymoon, etc... (I am lucky to have him).
Good luck with your healing. You are in my thoughts http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

So far, I still have the odor and some discharge, but other than that all is well. It hasn't even been a week so I think it will be fine. I will keep you posted and will let you know how long it lasts. Good luck with your procedure.

Thanks, and I will keep you updated on mine. I am waiting to hear when they can "squeeze" me in. I just want it over with and to be on my way to good health.
Also if you could keep me updated with yours, I'd really appreciate it. Let me know of any details you think I should know... How heavy the discharge is (maxi pad or mini pad..ahhaha!), the pain with healing, etc. Also, did your doctor say anything about exercising afterward? Boy...I am sorry I have so many questions... I am just nervous that I won't be able to enjoy the next 8 weeks of upcoming wedding things (Jack and Jill, Bach Party, the Wedding and Honeymoon)... and Plus,,,,I am such a wimp when it comes to pain!
Well, once again, good luck healing and you are in my thoughts http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif Let me know your results when you hear from the doctor, too http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

You shouldn't have to wear a thick maxi pad after the procedure if all goes well. I didn't have any bleeding, just some discharge. A thin maxi (not a panty liner) should be enough. As for pain, I didn't have any real pain from the procedure, as my doctor used extra anesthetic to numb the whole area of the cervix. Though having an extra large speculum in you for 20 minutes is nonetheless uncomfortable. For the remainder of the day after the procedure, I felt a little uncomfortable, but I wasn't in pain. The next day I felt fine.
As for excercisng, my doctor said not to do much for the next 4 weeks, nor insert anything into the vagina (so no tampons or sex). I guess they say this so nothing gets in the way of the cervix completely healing. If you have the procedure done soon, you should be fine by the honeymoon.
Good luck with you procedure.

Hello,
I'm just wondering how your discharge and odor are going. How long has it been now and is it still present? Have you gotten your results back yet? Good luck with that and keep us posted!

Hi Precious,
In two days it will be two weeks since I had the LEEP procedure done. I still have some discharge and spotting, but it's starting to get much lighter. I'm hoping I can start wearing a really thin maxi pad, or even liner soon.
Good luck with your LEEP.

Thanks! I had my LEEP about 15 hours ago and so far so good! I barely have any discharge (just some yellowy kind)...but I am due for my period today or tomorrow...I wonder how that will be. The doctor said that I didn't bleed during the procedure, so I wonder if that has anything to do with it?
I have a crazy question...Do you think I can go tanning? I know it sounds silly, but I am getting ready for our wedding (6 1/2 more weeks!!!). What do you think? http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif
Thanks for everything and good luck with your health!

I have no idea about tanning. I don't see why not.

HI! Its good to find this website with others going thru similar problems (not that I want anyone to have gynelogical problems), you know what i mean. I just had a leep procedure done 10 days ago, & I was nervous. Fortunately it wasn't too bad. For the first couple of days afterwards it was fine, a bit sore, no discharge and no blood, but on the 3rd day i had light bleeding (which at first freaked me out), I was assuming the worse. Anyway, then I noticed off and on from the 3rd day to NOW this odory watery brown discharge...... Sometimes it smells, sometimes it doesn't. I will definitely mention it to the dr. when I see him in 2 wks. Did it eventually go way for you guys?? How long did it last? Hope you are all doing well.

The type of discharge seems to vary a lot, but I really don't think it is supposed to have a bad odor. At first, I guess it could smell a little the way burning flesh smells. But, I would call the doc. Anytime anything down there smells, it's not a bad idea to call and ask.
The discharge seems to last anywhere from two to six weeks. Mine lasted about three weeks and I had some bleeding after my two-week follow-up.

Thanks for responding to the msg I wrote regarding discharge. Its been 2 wks (in 2 days that is) since my LEEP. I still have off and on discharge and a bit of bleeding, the bleeding is not heavy. There is still some odor but not as bad as it had been. I will see the dr. in a wk and I will ask him. I will feel better once he examines me to see if I'm healing ok. Seems like I've had the discharge problem for years, I hate this !! Makes me feel pretty insecure.

Has anyone had a leep recently? Mine was 2 wks ago. Just curious as to how you are healing? I'm doing better than I thought I would, just struggling w/the discharge & a bit of bleeding here and there. I will see him next wk. By then he can check to see how I'm healing and have my results. I always get nervous when I'm going to get any kind of results, especially medical ones. I wonder if odory discharge is normal, I would call him, but I'll be seeing him in a wk anyway. I hear that its to be expected (the odory discharge), but then i hear the dr. should be called if there is foul smelling discharge. I'm confused but I guess I'll find out more in a wk. Good luck to any of you who have had it or are about to get Leep done.

i had my leep on 11/13. there's been no pain and very light discharge, but i am having problems with this infernal ODOR! i've had BV (bacterial vaginosis) before and it smells exactly like that (like a fart - yikes!) it just started today. can you get bacterial infections from LEEPSs?

I had mine on 11-14. I had a bloody discharge for 2 weeks. The day I went in for my results I was in such a bad mood. I didn't realize how much pressure I had felt about it. When the doctor told me my results came back normal I almost cried from the relief. Maybe you will be as lucky.

I was having a problem and went to the doctor. I guess I had a Bacterial Infection. I was experiencing a lot of discharge that had a fishy smell to it. Got a pap smear done, and of course it came back abnormal. Guess I ended up having HPV. Well, I had the LEEP done July 31 2003......I didn't have my period until 3 months later, which I thought was weird. But I am now still having problems. I still have a lot of milky white discharge, and at times, I don't smell to pleasant. Still a fishy odor, and sometimes, just a foul odor. What is going on? Also, my boyfriend, whom I have been faithful too, for over a year now, gave me Herpes about a year ago, and now HPV. HE has not experienced any signs or symptoms of either, Herpes nor HPV. Why? Now he thinks that I have cheated on him since he doesn't have any symptoms of either. Why is this?

Hi JsGirl,
I am so sorry this has been so difficult on you. It is totally possible for guys and girls to have HPV and HSV and pass them on without ever having any symptoms. I have HSV and I have only had one outbreak. It makes it tough to remind myself that any sex - whether protected or unprotected - can be dangerous for any potential partners. My skin can be shedding the HSV when I don't even have an outbreak and he can get it from around the condom. And, you probably remember that the HPV that causes dysplasia doesn't have any symptoms. You have no idea you have it until you get the abnormal pap.
If your guy is really interested in staying with you, maybe you can get him to get on-line and do some research on his own. He can learn about how it is possible for him to have these things and give them to you and how it turns out that you have symptoms and he doesn't.
As for the smell and discharge, it sounds like something to see a doc about. I know it isn't any fun to go there and spread your legs for a relative stranger all the time, especially if things smell bad, but it really is necessary sometimes. I haven't had that kidn of discharge problem so I can't tell you what it might be, but I know that many infections can be really bad for you. And, if you get treated for something that can be transmitted sexually - I think BV is one, ask your doctor about it and ask your boyfriend to get treated at the same time so that he doesn't give it to you again.

Had Leep with hysteroscopy done at the same time on 1/ 7/ 05. It's 1/ 14/ 05, and today I had my one week check up / follow up. This is what I experienced. I was put under during the procedure with a seditive since I was also having a hysteroscopy done. I did not feel a thing. After the procedure I felt fine..no cramping or bleeding .
Later on during the second day, I had some discharge which was brownish black, and looked like coffed gounds. It smelled like a musty mix of burnt skin and dried blood. I believe it's the solution and /or paste they use on your cervix when having the leep procedure. About day 5, I noticed a slight tinge of pink after wiping myself when I went to the bathroom. This wasn't too bad at all, and the odor really disappeared. Today I went for my follow up, and my DR told me everything I experienced was normal and I actually am bleeding heavier now, since she did a full exam on me. It seems to be equal to the first or second day of when I get my period. I am not expected to have a period for another week or so, but perhaps she did a lot of probing, and caused me to bleed, or else I got my period early! Who knows.
All I know is, my results all came back great, and she said I was healing fine .
I would call your dr if you are bleeding as heavy as if it were your period on its worst day. I would also call your doctor if you smell like rotton eggs, or you have bad pain and a fever, which is more likely to be infection symptoms. If you smell from what I believe is a stong dried up blood smell in combination with a burning skin smell- basically nasty, and you're spoting a llittle with coffee ground lilke particles mixed in the discharge, you have nothing to worry about. See if each day it decreases just a bit, and then you will know your fine. You have to believe the stuff coming out of you is the stuff they put into you do do the procedure. Also, don't be surprised if tissure particles also come out from inside you. This looks like toilet paper covered in coffee gounds! How pleasant!

Guys are mostly carries. They can have it all their life with no symptoms. On another post I typed about my friend that had only been with one guy and was a virgin when she married him. Her husband of 10 years cheated on her while they were married with a girl that knew she had HPV but never told her husband about it. She had already had a hystercomy (spelling). Took no longer than a year for her to get to 3rd stage with HPV. Now remarried and the ex still has no signs of it. Her Dr. told her that she has had to tell women that were the age of 60 and older t hat they had HPV. They told the Dr. that they had only been with one man their entire life and they had passed on. Then the Dr. had to inform them that their husbands had cheated on them during thier marriage.
I am so sorry to hear about all of you that have this. I am so scared to call and make an appointment for a pap smear and HPV test. I started getting them done after my friend found out she had it. HUGS to you all!
