Has anyone tried Kathy Smith's 5-day jump start program where you eat 4 meals a day and cut out the starch from 2 of the meals?
I'm thinking about doing it but it seems like so many calories to me. Is that okay to do? Will it really work to jump start my metabolism?

any diet that tells you to increase your calories is full of hot air if you ask me.
the only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you are eating.

Yah I considered this one, but I kinda just used some of her ideas. :) What video did you get this from. I can remember there is like category 1,2 etc, and it's different colored sections that differentiate the food group, like starch, fruit, meat, and veg. I think it's a great plan, can you sum it up for me unless I am right. I used to workout to her ALOT, and have pretty much all her videos. She's great to start with and continue with for that matter. WHcih video is it?

Hi Jessicca (that's my name, too!)
I have her Fat Burning Breakthrough step aerobics video. I just got it and I've only done it once but I LOVE it. She is so great!

That 5 day jump start plan goes like this:
There is a category 1 which is dairy and meat (protein), category 2 which is Fruits and Vegetables, and category 3 which is starch.

Between 6-9am, you pick one choice from categories 1&2
Between 10am-1pm you pick one choice from categories 1,2&3
Between 204pm you pick one choice from categories 1,2,3
Between 5-8pm you pick one choice from categories 1&2

She lists the options you can have from each category (so for protein 2 eggs is one serving, 4oz. lean ham, beef, turkey or chicken, 6 oz tuna, shellfish, sole or snapper, etc.) and the same goes for the other categories.

I just feel like I'm eating SO much and I'm definitely exceeding 1200 calories by a fair bit even though I'm trying to choose the lower calorie choices. It just seems like so much food. How will it boost my metabolism?

I don't know anything about Kathy Smith, etc., but possibly, could you be confusing eating too much (volume) of food with calories? For example, I can either get 320 cal from 2 Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, or eat one of my huge dinner salads that has 4 cups of lettuce. The first choice seems minimal, and is less healthy. Here is another eye opener. Compare, for example 1 cup of granola cereal to 1 cup of all bran extra fiber (for calorie content). Same amount of food, similar vein (cereal) but vastly different caloric content.

Tuna is fantastic, just about know fat, just about all protein. 6 oz should be about 180 cal and around 38g of carb. Great choice--though 3 oz is enough for me as a serving.

First off, I think the plan is supposed to add up to 1500 calories a day. Secondly, I think when she says "boost you metabolism" she just means that the right combination of essential food groups in small meals throughout the day will result in a nice steady weight loss and keep the metabolism going so you are never hungry. And 1500 is better if you plan on working out. Plus, circuit training (intervals with weights) is a great way to boost the metabolism because after the workout, your body already burned some fat plus in additon to that, your body is synthesising or making the mucle and it takes energy to do that, thus, burning calories while doing so. :) So, your burning calories all day long while your body is building muscle. I would keep it up and her "Weight Loss" workout is a KILLER but it is SOOO effective for weight loss and it may be old, but it is one of her best. My other favorite video by her is the "Lift weights to Lose Weight" 1 and 2, and I used to use that in conjunction with her "Cardio Timesaver" workout which is split up in two 20 minute workouts which is real fun..It's kinda dancy with some athletic moves in it. Oh and there are a few others that I love from her, lol, but I think I have all of them except a few. She's a great instructor and YOU WILL see results if you keep it up and change your workout every few weeks so your body don't get used to doing the same thing over and over again. Do you have any other videos made by Kathy?

No, that's the only video I have of hers right now but I definitely want to get more! I think she's absolutely wonderful. Her website has lots of great tips as well. I will definitely look into the videos that you mentioned though!

I think I will stick with her 5-day plan. I haven't followed it completely yet because I've been so nervous about increasing my calories but I trust that she knows what she's talking about and it's only for 5 days so it can't hurt. Then after that I might lower my calories but still sort of stick to it.

Thanks for all of your feedback Jessicca!
