View Full Version : Leep Procedure

Hello!
I found this board two weeks before my Leep procedure. I read every posting for about two hours, which included the good and the bad experiences. I would like to thank each and everyone of you who shared your experience, I was more prepared than ever going into the doctor's office. My Leep was on Thursday, July 10 and I would like to share my experience for those of you needing to go in for one.

My husband and I went to the Air Force Academy hospital and checked in at the Ob/gyn clinic. The nurse took me back and took my blood pressure and asked if I had taken the pregnancy test beforehand. I did and it was negative.

Next my husband and I sat down with the doctor and he explained the procedure to me. I had written down five questions that I had to ask him before I agreed to the procedure. They were as follows:
1. How will this effect my chances of becoming pregnant and carrying to term. He answered this very honestly and said that of course there were risks involved. He was going to take off small slivers instead of a big deep chunk in order to keep the bleeding down and to prevent him from going too deep.
2. How long will I have to wait until I get pregnant. He told me that he would prefer that I wait until after my next pap smear, which is scheduled in 4 months. He'd like to get me in the green from dysplasia before I try for kids.
3. I was told I have a small cervix. Will you be taking more tissue away from my small cervix. Again, he told me that he would be taking 10-12 small slivers so that he doesn't cut too deep, and my cervix should be fine.
4. I didn't get any pain medication after the colposcopy and I needed it because the cramping was unbearable. He prescribed me vicodin.
5. Will I be able to swim on my swim team soon? He told me to wait a month http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif

So I was satisfied with his answers, and he definitely put me at ease in his willingness to talk to me for 30 minutes beforehand!

I had to undress from the waist down and lay on the table with my feet in the stirrups. Relaxing was the biggest thing my nurse told me in order to make it easier on everyone. The speculum was insterted and the large sticky pad was placed on my thigh. He examined me again with the colposcope and told me everything he was about to do. They let me listen to the LEEP machine beforehand, and it sounds just like a dentist's drill. I saw the loop used as well, and it was very small. The first injection of local was the worst of it all. I could feel the pinch, just like a biopsy pinch. After the first injection I couldn't feel anything at all. The medicine went straight to my heart and I started shaking quite a bit, but it only lasted for 1-2 minutes. I only felt the doctor move the speculum. I couldn't feel anything else. He showed me a sliver he took out, and it was about the size of a small paperclip. The procedure took about 20 minutes because he was very thorough and wanted to make sure he didn't go too deep. He cauterized me and then put that mustard type stuff in to stop the bleeding. When he took the speculum out, the mustard stuff had dried on it and it felt like he was ripping it out of me, which hurt for a brief instant. In my opinion, this procedure hurt less than the colposcopy. I had less bleeding, and he took less tissue it seemed.

I laid in bed and watched girlie movies and ate ice cream afterwards and felt just fine the next day after a good night sleep. I think I could finally relax after the whole ordeal was over.

Good luck to those who will be going through a leep-I will be thinking of you.

I had the LEEP three weeks ago.

My gynecologist is also a professor who teaches LEEP, so he is basically an expert in the procedure.

In my gynecologist's office, I had the LEEP. This procedure was like a long , extended internal exam.It took 20 minutes. I had the local anasthetic - the needles do pinch. I didn't think I'd feel the needle-thought it would seem more like novacaine needles but it was pinchy.

I didn't feel anything. I was very calm after my cervix was numbed. While he was doing the LEEP,it felt like my cervix was being painted with warm liquid. That's the sensation I felt.

My experience was one in which there was A LOT of smoke in the room afterward. My throat was drying out from it - it smelled like someone was burning paper in the room.

A physician's assistant assisted my gyne with the procedure. She was a doll and she held my hand, talked to me and my gyne spoke some during but more after the procedure.

This was for CIN II. My cervix looked really bad 13 months ago and colposcopys and PAPs were coming back normal than finanlly in May a year and month later)-abnormal cells.

I am so thankful for this procedure !

i had a leep done about a week ago. i was diagnosed with dyslasia about a week before graduating high school. it was devestating. the colposcopy was very painful to me, i passed out in the middle of it. they put me to sleep for the leep. i am still in slight pain, nothing big enough for pain medication though. i am very dissappointed that my doctor didnt send me home from the leep with any medication though. i realle needed it the first 3 days.

Hi Carrie

I had the LEEP done in my doctor's office in May. I have heard that they sometimes have you take a painkiller ahead of time or give you something for anxiety. Mine was spur of the moment because I was moving, so I didn't have either. If you are so anxious that you aren't sleeping, maybe you should call your doc and discuss your concerns.

I think the colpo with biopsies hurt more than the LEEP and I bled more with the biopsies. The LEEP starts a lot like the colpo. They put a sticky electrode-like pad on your leg and make you sign some papers about the risks. They use a slightly bigger speculum which hurt me because I am a pretty small girl. They also use the same vinegar solution to change the way your cervix looks under the light and I think that stings a little. Then, they give the local. Mine was lidocaine with epinephrine. The lidocaine (not sure how to spell that) is what the dentists use and the epinephrine slows bleeding. Most women say that the shot hurts the worst, but I didn't really feel it. My nurse was totally shocked. After the shot, you can feel movement outside and around the cervix, but you can't feel them cutting off your cervix. Not sure if it is the same for everyone, but that little disc of tissue that they show on the handouts looks little and mine was not. Mine looked really big when they took it out and put it in the specimen cup. As they cut it out, it burns the edge and the smell of burning flesh can be shocking. Usually, they use something to suck that out.

I was still shaking from the epineprhine so my mom drove me home. I could feel some pressure, but no real pain. I didn't really bleed for the first two weeks. I had some strange fluids coming out. Mostly, it's normal unless it is bright and smelly. It's really a good idea to take it easy and follow the instructions so that you don't have any complications. I felt good enough that it was tough to restrain myself, but I kept remembering how much tissue they took out of me and that it had to grow back.

I had a follow-up at two weeks and the doc rubbed something on the wound and then I started to bleed a little. I have my first follow-up pap today, but the margins of the section they took were clear which is a good sign.

Good luck with yours. We'll be thinking about you on the 29th.

I looked at this message board the night before my LEEP and swore to myself that I would return after to comment. I read one particular post that scared me so bad I had to turn off the computer so I wouldn't faint. My LEEP was 6 days ago and I want to let anyone know who is about to have one not to worry (I wish I could have read this myself a week ago). I had the procedure in my doctors office with nothing but local numbing and a tranquilizer. Make sure to ask your doctor to talk you through everything (it calms you). It was over in about 30 minutes, there was no smoke (she had a machine to suck it up), there was no smell of burning flesh (like I had read) and no pain. The weirdest part was the shaking and heart palpitations caused by the shot which subsided in like a minute. I spent the night resting comfortably (no cramps..nothing). The one advise that I can give is that since my experience was so great I did not rest very much the next couple of days. 3 days after my surgery I began to feel very exhasted and fatigued. I have taken some days off to do what I should've done right after which is rest and eat well. I know that because the wound is internal it is easy to forget that your body is hurt and weak but don't hesitate to stay in bed for a day after. It is a worth not having to do it like me....a week later. By the way, I am still discharging and bleeding lightly after 6 days...stock up on pantiliners, ice cream and friends.

Good luck, don't worry and ask questions...

Just wanted to share with everyone who is still watching. I didn't think it was that big of a deal, but now I am starting to feel it.

Anyway...My doctor called last night and talked to my mom (I am 26, bit not quite healthy enough to apply for jobs, so I am at home right now. Oh, and my last landlady owes me $850 and I have to sue her to get it back so I can afford to move again.). He told her if I could find someone and have two kids he would fix my health problems, but not before then.

I figured he was calling with bad pap results or he would send them in the mail or wait for me to call later this week. He called back just now and the result was ASCUS, with probable HPV effect. Not bad, yet, but not good either. He had told me twice that I healed well after the LEEP in May, but now the follow-up doesn't look so good. I'll have to decide to have a pap or a pap and colpo in November. He still hopes that my immune system will kick in and take over, but my immune system really doesn't seem to be doing so good right now.

Thanks to all for the great information on the leep. I am having this procedure done today and feel better after reading about the procedure. I am planning to have this done in the office and plan to take a couple of tylenol and 1 xanax. I have mild to moderate dysplasia. I am really upset and frightened over the pain I may experience and the outcome. It seems most of you are much younger than me, I am 53. I really have been going through agony as to why I have this. Only been with one person and thought he was a faithful partner.

ALEJRANDA......I read your post and was wondering about the medicine they gave you caused heart palpitations....... what do you mean by that? I already have a thing where my heart skips beats, is that what your talking about or are you meaning your heart speeds up? Please let me know! Does anyone else have these skips beats and went through with the local...??

Carrie:

The "heart palpitations" occur when you have it done under local anesthesia, typically in the doctor's office. The shot often contains epinephrine which is what we call adrenaline. It's what speeds up your heart and makes you jumpy when you get into a fight or when you are afraid. It also constricts blood vessels which is good during a procedure like this so that you don't lose too much blood. I'm not sure if every doc uses it. When I had mine, I didn't feel the pain in my cervix, but I felt some immediate pressure in my heart. Within seconds my heart was racing and my legs were trembling. My body felt like it wanted to run and I had a hard time staying still. For most people it seems to go away right away, but I was amped for a few hours.

Having a warning that it may happen will probably help you a lot. My doc warned me that the shot would hurt a lot, but he didn't tell me about the epinephrine. If you think it might interfere with your heart condition, discuss it with your doctor.

Good luck to those of you who are having yours done soon. Tylenol and Xanax sounds great. I could have used it. I was in tears in my docs office for about an hour while he and the nurse prepared to perform mine. It happened the day we decided and I am glad I didn't have any longer than that to worry about it.

I'd love to hear from the others that had theirs in May and June. How are your follow-ups going?

I'm scheduled for my first(and hopefully only) LEEP in a few weeks. I hear everyone saying that taking pain killers or relaxants before can help...I have neither. My nurse told me to take 800mg ibuprofen before I come in, but I take Ibuprofen pretty much daily for headaches...how much can it help me then? I'm afraid to tell my doctor that I feel like I need something more before-hand for fear that he'll think that I'm some kind of druggie, but I've got a low threshold for pain and I can't even sleep just thinking about having it done. I'm sure that once I'm in there that it won't be so bad, but for now, I'm freaking out...any alternatives or suggestions?

PaNik5717

Hey Robin,

I'm in Gallup. Maybe I can get you to recommend a new doc for me in ABQ.

I would call the nurse. I did it without any painkillers or anxiety meds, but that was because mine was done very suddenly. A lot of women get the Xanax so you shouldn't be afraid to ask for it or something similar if the Xanax is somehow contraindicated for you. Don't worry about looking like a druggie. They will probably only give you one anyway and you really have the right to it if you are under so much stress about it.

Otherwise, work out, eat right, treat yourself to something nice, take a hike in the mountains. Do whatever you can to relax until then.

Let us know how it goes.

Hey PaNik-

I have a great doctor...it took me a while to find one that I really like. He delivered my son and I've never felt like I was in better hands... Name Michael G. Flax....He does all aspects of gynecology. He's an infertility specialist too. I hope this helps. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wink.gif

I found out yesterday that my doc wants to perform the LEEP procedure on my in a few weeks and I am getting a little nervous and hesitant. I have been having up and down paps for the past 2 years and was hoping it would get better. Not my luck! I am so afraid of needles and when I read that I freaked........can someone give me some good info. I had the biopsy yesterday and that was bad enough!

PaNik5717

Hi dkoz,

In my opinion, anyone who can suffer through a colpo with biopsies can survive a LEEP. The colpo was far more painful to me because there is no shot, just them biting out chunks of tissue without numbing it at all. Then, there seems to be more blood loss because the wounds aren't treated with anything or cauterized.

I didn't really even feel the shot and only had a feeling of pressure, not full-blown cramps after that. It was hard to take care of myself after and follow the docs instructions because I felt pretty good with very little pain and a clear discharge.

Perhaps you could have some kind of preliminary appointment to discuss it all with your doctor. Kind of a session to desensitize you to the process and the equipment. At least ask your doc what kind of painkillers and anxiety drugs you can take.

Thank PaNik5717 for your thoughts. Just another question.....will I be able to drive after the procedure or should I consider having someone go with me? Also, I am not sure what I will feel like the next day and am conteplating on taking the day off to relax.......would that be benificial?

PaNik5717

As for how you will feel after and the next day, I have to tell you that you won't know until you get there. Every woman has a different story. Right after the procedure, I was still shaking from the adrenaline and from the trauma of the whole afternoon so my mom drove me home. I could have driven the five minutes home if I hadn't had her there, but it might not be entirely safe.

I felt fine the next day, but I had big plans to start a new, physical job two weeks later so I took things very easy. I didn't want to do any damage to myself or cause the healing to take longer. One random thing I did do that hurt me was that I wore a black bikini in the sun. The heat seemed to aggravate the burned area inside me. Very odd.

Whatever you can do to relax before and after will be to your benefit. Let us know how things turn out.

Well I am at work the day after my colposcopy and I feel OK. That was the second time I have had a biopsy and I guess if I could get through that I can get through this. I just have panic attacks when it comes down to medical situations! Thanks.......reading everyones postings helps!

Hey dkoz,

How does your doc know if you need the LEEP if you just had the colpo yesterday? It seems like the results should be important. Was it a colpo with biopsies? Maybe the results will turn out better than you and your doc think. We can all hope and pray.

Two years ago I had a mild dysplasia and I wanted to just monitor it to see where things went. My results keep going up and down for the first year then normal and out of the blue it went to high grade so she suggested the best thing to do would be LEEP procedure. I was hoping that is was nothing but it turns out that she was very concerned and that would be the best way to go.

To janet n - I am in the same boat as you are... I am 49, and have been in a "monogamous" marriage for 20 years. I ended up with cervical HSIL and carcinoma in situ of the vagina from HPV. Despite the assurances that the virus can live in the system for years... Blah, blah, blah... I knew that 20 years of clean paps and then this scenario just didn't add up - So I asked my husband, and you guessed it - numerous partners, unprotected sex with all of them. I had to have blood tests for Hepetitis and HIV immediately prior to my LEEP, and smears for gonorreah and clamydia. Talk about being mortified.
I have a strong disconnect from my body now, and find I have trouble relating to my friends. Nobody knows what's wrong with me. I haven't figured out a way to feel better.

Hi, this is my first time here and I am so happy I found it. I started having the abnorm pap in 99 and have been keeping this all a secret from my family, so I pretty much had no place to talk about it. Today, I went and had another colposcopy and they brought up the issue of the leep (which sounded scary)...I was curious in those of you that have gone through with it, how long after you started having the abnor paps did you follow through with the leep procedure??

Lightgirl,

The length of time before LEEPs has differed for all of us.

My first pap was abnormal, but inconclusive. The second showed CIN II. When I went in for the colposcopy six weeks later, the doc said she was 95% sure she would have to do a LEEP before she even did the colpo. In fact, we scheduled the LEEP before I left the office.

But other women have been able to "watch" the dysplasia for years before having the procedure. It just depends on how fast its progressing -- if it looks like your body will take care of it on its own or not.

Hope that helps!

So it turns out that the results came in and yesterday I got the bad news. Yup am going to need to get the leep procedure done. I'm scared depressed and tired I have CIN III which is severe. My husband went with me to get the results and it hard that is all I have to say. I have a daughter she's going to be 3 yr's old in January I thank god that i have her because I asked the doctor about the getting pregnant again issue and it turns out that there are some chances that I might not be able to have another child. I will be scheduling an appointment with a specialist when I get back from vacation I will keep you guys posted on the procedure in the mean time have me in your prayers I will definately have you guys in mine...

Hey Jennifer-I was just told that I had severe dysplasia and I am scheduled for a Leep next week. I was wondering why you thought you would not be able to have children again? I have been reading a lot about this (because I just recently got married and want a family-no children yet.) and i've been told that the Leep caused some problems but almost everyone is able to have children after the procedure. Have you heard differently? I would like to know before I follow through with this procedure. I def. want children in the future! Please let me know what your doctor thinks. Thanks

I do have a question though...after you guys have got through the LEEP what were your test results...did you still have low grade changes?? Or is this some kind of magical cure??? Jennifer32 I just thought I would respond to you because I was treated almost 2 weeks ago for my severe dysplasia. I was freaking out before the whole thing and just wanted to assure you that its not all that bad. You hear a lot of whorror stories about it, but i want to assure you that not all procedures dont go wrong. With me, the doctor wanted to do a cone biopsy (where they remove a cone shaped piece of my cervix). She wanted to do this over LEEP so that edges of the biopsy were clear to see if the dysplasia had spread out of that area. WIth a LEEP< it sort of burns the cells so it is hard sometimes for the labs to determine whether the cells are abnormal or not. This is a really bad explanation sorry! Also, she since it was severe, my doc said that if i did LEEP, i would have to do it probably several times, and from what I hear, its not fun! My sister has had it done a few times. For my LEEP i was in an outpatient clinic and was "knocked out" during sugery. I wouldnt want to have to do it any other way, and i am deathly afraid of surgery. I get my test results back in the next few weeks. But keep me posted because I thinkt hat you will probably be having teh same procedure as me! I hope you are having fun on your trip and try not to worry!

Hello, my name is Carlyn. I'll be having my first LEEP on March the 3rd. I have basically been told only that I have advanced pre cancerous cells and they need to be removed ASAP! My Dr. said that if I wait much longer I'll be risking full blown cancer. So needless to say I'm a little shook up about this. Ecspecailly when I'm regular with all my checkups and have been since i was 14 years old. (23now)

I, however, suffer from anxiety dissorder. I am on medication for this daily and another pill 'as needed'. I've heard you ladies talk about something in the shot that speeds up the heart. I'm a little freaked out about this because if my heart starts to race, I'll have a panic attack.

I go in for my consult this Friday but I was just curious as to if you ladies knew anything about that.

Is it safe to ask for a script for like two xanax or something to relax me so that shot won't make me loose my head?
hehe

The rest of it, I'm not really worried about. The Biopsy's were pretty painful for me and I made it out of there alive. So if it's not worse than that, I'm good to go!

QUOTE]

Here's what happened with me - I had an abnormal pap come back. Doctor made me get another pap to confirm and also tested for HPV. Came back abnormal again with a positive for HPV, and said I had "Mild Dysplasia" (abnormally growing cells, probably what you have - not really a "growth"). Then I had a coloscopy (looking at cervix with magnifier and "painting" the cervix with a vinegar substance to highlight any abnormalities) and if there were some, then a biopsy would be done. My biopsy results now say "Severe Dysplasia". Doctor told me that this was a progression, from Mild to Severe in the course of 2 months.

This is something you NEED to get done. Yes, it can go away on it's own, but chances are much much much higher that it WON'T go away on its own. The LEEP isn't that bad - I was awake the whole time, had a pain-number shot and felt nothing. 25 minutes and that was it. One day of cramps afterward, then I was fine. I still have discharge, but it's not a big deal. Of course, everyone reacts differently after this procedure. I really doubt that the LEEP could cause infertility - if you have it done multiple times I'm sure that it could start influencing fertility. But if you let this go, hoping that it will go away chances are it will progress, and the chance that you would have to have a hysterectomy would be much higher, and then you'll never be able to have children. I would talk to your doctor about your worries, but get this taken care of. Hoping this will go away could prove very dangerous to your health.

I would also ask your doctor why she isn't doing any further testing to see exactly what stage (mild, moderate or severe) of dysplasia you have. I had one more pap that you have had to make sure the results were correct (just irritation on your cervix can cause an abnormal pap) and I also had a biopsy done. I would ask your doctor if she is sure you need to skip these steps and go straight to the LEEP.

Good luck! Talk to your doc!

Question....

My wife had a leep procedure done six weeks ago and was scheduled to go back for a check up in two weeks when she received a call from her DR. stating that he had rescheduled another procedure to be done in a month. I was not present at the call and have been told very little from my wife who is now worried about having to undergo another procedure. Is this common? How will this affect her ability to reproduce and I am now dealing with my wifes depression which she has gone into. Requesting to be left alone and fearing the worst possible situation. She was originally diagnosed as having a high 4 state of dysplasia, which means little to me but I was made aware that this is not good. Any one have any info regarding having a second Leep procedure and the reasoning behind this.

Thanks for your help.

Its nice to hear other stories. I am going to have my SECOND LEEP procedure done on 11/16/07 Im not thrilled at all. I had my first one done in 05 and i went under anesthesia. It was recommended because i was not able to handle the biopsy very well. This time i am going to do it in patient with the local anesthetic. I hope I do not feel anything. From the sounds of it i should only be feelin the needle *****. I hope so. I was prescribed Valume to relax me i am known to get a bit worked up. For my second biopsy i had to take 2 valumes and 2 vicodin and i was still worked up and felt it. Boy if i never have another biopsy of anything i will be greatful. It dosent seem that anyone has posted in well years but whatever right. It helps to get your fears out and to inform others. My first leep was nice i was asleep. after the surgery i was fine. no pain. i waited to heal and everything was fine. Then well another abnormal pap. and of course its bad enough to need another leep. I have hpv. I am getting the new gardisiil shot they came out with. Hopefully that helps and this will be my FINAL leep. Anyway i guess thats enough ill let you know how my appt goes on the 16. pray that all goes well and there is no pain and i heal well and do not need another. I only have so much vagina to spare you know. :)
