View Full Version : Could I have type 1?

I am 17 and for the past few months I have found myself craving carbohydrates and/or sweets (such as jujubes) after not eating for an extended period of time. When the opportunity comes to eat, I find that I over-indulge in the food. After this I almost feel ill (perhaps from the increase in blood sugar) for about 30-45 minutes afterward. When I mean by “ill” is a feeling of slight dizziness (I feel like sitting or lying down).

I should also mention that I do not seem to gain weight no matter to what extent this happens. Should I be concerned about this? Should I be checked out by a doctor? I have not been diagnosed with anything related to diabetes nor has anyone in my family (to my knowledge).

Just from what you wrote, I would say no you don't have type 1. Some symptoms would be increased hunger and thirst, frequent urination, blurry vision, weight loss, fatigue, dry skin. Eventually you'd have stomach pains and possibly vomiting.

You may be craving the sweets because if you haven't eaten for awhile and have had a drop in blood sugar (very normal) then your body responds by craving food, mainly carbs because those are what will raise your blood sugar back up and then you won't feel that craving anymore....at least temporarily anyway. It's normal for that to happen to a certain extent but when it happens all the time then it's probably time to get checked out. You could be hypoglycemic which means that you have an abnormal decrease in sugar in your blood but that doesn't mean you're diabetic.

I don't know why you'd feel dizzy after you eat though. If anything, you should feel dizzy before you eat the carbs. Could be that the carbs just haven't taken effect yet and you still feel the effects of the low sugar.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it unless you're having other symptoms. If you're very active then you probably just need to eat more. But if it does keep happening or if you have any other symptoms then please get it checked out. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, maybe I was over-reacting a bit. If I notice any other symptoms (or if what I already experience gets worse), I'll get checked out.

Thanks again for your help!
