View Full Version : Question regarding testing

My main fear when getting glasses and contacts is that when they test your eyes they do that whole "is this better or this?" thing. And sometimes I can't tell which is better. I'm afraid that if I choose badly that I'll be stuck with the results forever. I've gotten glasses before that don't seem as good as others I've gotten in the past, and I think it's due to not choosing the right perscription.

I wouldn't worry too much about that - sometimes I can't tell which is better either, and I just tell the doctor that they are really close. If one has more haziness or blur around the letters, I say that one is slightly worse. Feel free to take your time on those and ask the doctor to repeat them if necessary. Once the doctor determines your prescription, he or she should test it by having you look at a chart through both lenses and making sure that you are able to read all numbers and letters clearly. If it is not as clear as you think it should be, let your doctor know and adjustments can be made until it is just right.

They will also run the same tests again just before your procedure to make sure there have been no changes - example, contact-wearers have to wear glasses for a number of days before the procedure since contact lenses change the shape of your eye, so their tests such as the ones that map out their eye, will likely have some changes from when they were initially tested to see if they were a good candidate.

Hope that helps :).

fastplant,
In addition to what madera said, they actually use some machine other than the eye chart that helps them determine your vision. I don't know how exactly it works but, it does. Have no fear that they won't get it right. They are very thorough. I did have that fear myself at first but, they are too good to cause you harm. Just make sure that you get the right doctor with the right credentials. It is not cheap and shouldn't be. The cheapest at Lasik Plus was $699 per eye but, that was for the oldest procedure. I would not go any lower than that for the oldest. Most procedures should be around at least a grand per eye.

From what I told my doc's office telling contact wearing patients during my wait, they prefer you to wait a month before the procedure. I don't know if most places are the same or if they are longer or shorter than that but, keep that in mind.
