View Full Version : I think I may have colon cancer, now what?

I had a colonoscopy 2 days ago (btw, i'm a 34 year old female, no family history) & the Dr. removed an 8mm cyst ( or so he said it was). He said these things are usually benign, especially in someone my age. Well the nurse called today to schedule a follow up visit to discuss further options. When I asked her what that meant she just said the dr would like to see me tmrw. I asked her straight out if I had cancer & she didn't answer. I'm so terrified I don't know what to do. Does this mean I have it? I don't know what to do, please somebody respond! Is this how others were told they have cancer? I'm sorry if this is long or doesn't make sense, I only found out an hour ago. Any thoughts would be appreciated!!!

I can't tell you if it is cancer or not, only your doctor can tell you that, but at 8mm it is very small. That means if it is cancer, you caught it very early. So take heart, even if you do need treatment, it will probably be very minimal.

It was a carcinoid tumor. Sounds scary but the Dr. took out more tissue to biopsy & it was benign, Thank God!!! I still need to see a surgeon for a second opinion but I think it's all gonna be OK! Best of luck to all of you! K.

Thank you for posting a follow-up, I was wondering how everything came out. I'm really happy for you, that's great news! Best of health to you, and God bless.

I'm glad things look okay so far. I was in a similar situation. I was 35, but my polyp was cancerous, fortunately caught at a very early stage. I still had to go through radiation treatment, as a precautionary measure. If caught early, colon cancer is very treatable. I urge you to get a second opinion, even though you're probably okay. I'd also have a follow up colonscopy within 2 years, since you're at a high risk for polyps. After that, if you're okay, you'll probably be able to wait 5 years until your next test. Be aggressive. This is a treatable form of cancer!

I do have to have a flex-sig in March just to check up. I will probably have to do this every 6 months for a while. The surgeon & I decided that I don't need surgery unless something else comes up in an examination. It's kind'a scary when your tests come back both positive & negative at the same time! I'm keeping a positive attitude though!
