Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me. This is a long story but I'll condense it as best I can.
4 weeks ago had an extraction of lower molar (one next to where wisdom tooth used to be)
3rd day post op my jaw was swollen and extremely sore to the touch. Went back to dentist and was told "you're fine, extraction site looks fine" When asked about the lump on the side of my face, was told "leave it alone and quit touching it, you have only been post op 3 days"
4th day, see a different dentist and am told the tooth next to the extracted tooth abcessed (has 16 yr old crown on it), was put on more PVK (?) 500mg 4 x day. I've been on this stuff 2 weeks now.
5th day, in to my regular doc and she puts me on a different medicine Clyndomyacin (sp?)
Following week i'm scheduled for a root canal. Go in to have it done, after 8 try's no numbness. Scheduled for following week.
Next attempt at RC and can only partially complete. Can't get RC tool into 3rd canal, was told it was too tight. Also told tooth was bleeding inside. Dentist packed it with RC prep and a temp filling on my old crown. Was told to come back in a week.
Major pain that night, next morning called a different doc and had it extracted. It felt like it came out fine and was never told otherwise. No suggestion at a follow-up appointment either.
Here is where I need the advice. First, I need to mention that I am a gastric bypass patient and only absorb 10% of what I put into my stomach so I am not convinced that the antibiotics have worked completely. I am now preop 5 days and my jaw seems to be getting more tender instead of better. My biggest concern is the socket is not "clean" like the other extraction site. I was rinsing the other day and couldn't get it "clean" per se. So I gently used a toothpick to help out. I felt bone/root. It is very close to the surface of the gum line and takes up about 1/2 of the extraction site.
Did the tooth break? Is this a bone fragment? Is it a root tip? I was told that due to the infection (which I'm not convinced was completely gone) that my ligaments were very soft. Could the bone have softened enough to cause a fracture and then come up into the extraction site? What does a greenstick fracture feel like?
I'm terrified to go back in to the dentist and really want someone to say not to worry, you're fine and just quit touching it.
Any thoughts?
