I am wondering if anyone else has this problem. I have been dieting for 7 weeks, eating less than 1200 calories a day and watching my carbs. I have been exercising for 27 min. per day for the last 10 days and have not lost an ounce. One week I actually gained 1 1/2 lbs. I know my meds can play a part in all this but to what extent? I am on Metformin, glipizide, Avandia and some Blood pressure meds. I feel like a walking pharmacy.
I still am troubled by what they call the "Dawn Phenamonon" and don't know how to avoid that. I have been a Diabetic 2 since 1991 and every day is a struggle. Is there any help out there???

Losing weight is difficult sometimes. You might benefit from "Live Life Like You Have No Diabetes" by Jayne Boykin and Bonny C. Damocles. The methods used by several people is really an eye opener and may help with your weightloss and early morning BG. I have been using this method for 5 years and it is still working for me.

 A 1200 calorie diet is not the way. You may be depriving you body of vital nutrients!
Question: How long did it take you to gain the weight? Don't expect to lose it in any less time and still remain healthy. Adjust your diet to lose slowly.
List everything you eat on a case-by-case basis. Get an appointment with a nutritionist and you will be surprised by what you will learn.
Get a copy of at American Diabetes association's Exchange guide and learn how to use it.
Plan on making other lifestyle changes.
successfu; meal planning is important. Shopping for food begins on the planning table. I also have a copy of Corinne T Natzer's "The Complete Book of Food Counts." (it is available on-line and in most book stores.) It is useful for meal planning & suggesting alternative and "least case examples" of foods.
Need more help?

Avandia is known to cause weight gain, and so are some blood pressure meds. I am diabetic and had lost over 65 pounds once i was taken off avandia. Then more recently(last month) i gained 10 lbs in less than ten days due to norvasc for bp.
About three yrs ago i started seeing a really good dietitian and she has helped me immensely. I was put on a 1200 cal. diet, i track every morsel that goes into my mouth and exercise for at least 30 mins.
It is difficult to lose weight, but it can be done. Have you tried to eat the six small meals daily. That helped me avoid the lows and helped me lose the weight.I use the lifestyle change of five veggies daily(at least) and stick to portion control.
Maybe you should found out if some of your meds impede your weight loss efforts and see about making changes. Good luck and i hope you find an answer.

Sweetnan, look at your other signs of weight loss. A friend told me that she did the same thing; didn't lose weight and even gained, but she is losing inches. She actually bought a measuring tape and measures her hips and waist and ankles, etc. She's noticed a decrease in their size. So she is losing body bulk (I think that's what they call it) and her muscles are toning up. Just go back to your doctor and tell him or her what's happening. He might be able to suggest something different. Or maybe a dietician would help. They can put you on the proper diet for your type of health. But don't give up!

Thank you everyone for all the support and good advice. First of all, I am going to buy the book by Joyce Boykin, today! It sounds like a great , helpful book.
I do try and eat a healthy variety of foods and do take a vitamin supplement. I am using the Slimfast diet for breakfast and lunch and eating a light dinner. I do not eat in between meals. I know I have a lot of work to do as I was a terrible junk food eater. I do 30 min. of walking on the treadmill every day, this should help too.
I also am on Avandia and have gained more weight since my dosage was increased to 8mg. I am hoping to eliminate this drug by changing my eating habits. I also take Norvasc, we'll see how much this change will help my BP.
Again, thanks for all your support, I will keep you informed on my progress.

I know this post is a few weeks old, but I wanted to share my thoughts.
1. Slimfast may produce results, but once you go off "the program", you will probably gain it back. It does not teach you portion control, how to balance your meals nutritionally, etc. You cannot live on Slimfast forever.
2. 1200 calories is pretty low, especially if you are working out. Your body might have put itself into starvation mode. You need the proper fuel to move and exercise.
3. Try mixing up your exercise routine. Your body gets used to functioning at a certain pace, in a certain way, and needs to be challenged.
I hope that you find the solution that works for you. Good luck and don't give up.

Have you ever heard of Provida Life Science???? I've been on there program for 6 weeks now and I've lost 22 pounds. It's really great. I've tried Adkins, counting carbs, fat ect... you name it. And this is the only "weight loss program" that I've been able to loose on with out feeling I'm starving.

Kitty, Thanks for your interest in helping me!! I know I can't live on Slimfast, it is too costly (LOL). It is easy and I thought I could get a good start by using it. Over many years, I have tried the Atkins diet , which worked until I went off of it. I did pretty good on a Shaklee program but over the years I always seem to gain it back. Anyway another problem is my knees, everytime I get a good exercise (walking) program going my knees start to give me trouble. I appreciate your help and am not giving up yet.
Submarinerwife, I have never heard of Provida Life Science but will check it out. Thanks,
Nancy
