Can anyone help me? I have a question about Bone Marrow transplant. Does blood type play an important part in matching bone marrow donors? Do you have to have the same type blood as the recipient in order to be tested for a match?

HLA-typing and genetic typing are far more important than blood typing when it comes to bone marrow transplant [BMT] or peripheral blood stem cell transplant [PBSCT].

You can find out all you need to know about Bone Marrow Transplant on the National Cancer Institute Web site:
http://www.nci.nih.gov/

Other excellent sources of information include the major teaching/research cancer centers such as Johns Hopkins, M.D. Anderson and Fred Hutchinson [which pioneered this procedure].

Also recommend you visit ACOR.org as well as the Bone Marrow Foundation, and the National Bone Marrow Registry.
