Hi!

I'm wondering if someone could help me with this, as I'm a BIT confused.

Am I supposed to start a new pack on the sunday after my period ends or starts?

Also, how long does it take for the pills to take affect? I'm really confused about this one because I've heard a week, then a month, so i don't know what to believe, and despite using condoms, I'm pretty paranoid (thus, very much in favour of using two methods of BC!).

Any info you could give me would be greatly appreciated!

Thanx again,
--LMB

You're to start your period the Sunday after your period. For example, if you get your period on Tuesday, you start the pill that Sunday. If you get your period on Sunday, you start that day.

It takes 7 days of perfect use for the pill to be fully effective. However, many practitioners suggest abstaining/using a back-up method for the full first cycle.

It should actually state in your birth control insert (instructions) how long you should use an alternate method of birth control.

If you start the pill on the first day of your period you should not need a back up method. If you do the Sunday start and this was not the first day of your period you will need to use another method of birth control for one week (AFTER you have taken the following Sunday's pill). That being said I waited at least two weeks  ! Although a week should be sufficient because you will also notice from your insert that if you miss a pill you only use a back up method for seven days.

If you have not started taking them yet there are a couple things to keep in mind when choosing a start day. If you start on the first day of your period you are suppose to be protected from pregnacy immediatey, but you may want to figure out when your period will come. What I mean by that is that most women begin their period within the first 2nd to 3rd day of taking the inactive pills, this means if you start the pill on a Wednesday and take the last active one on a Tuesday your period will most likely start on the Thursday or Friday which means a period on the weekend.

It you start the pill on a Sunday (use back up!) and take the last active one on a Saturday, you will likely start your period on the Monday or Tuesday and it will be gone by the weekend. I have read that you will never have a weekend period with the Sunday start but...I do the Sunday start and my period does not start until the Wednesday or Thursday of my week off the pill (I have the 21 day pack and instead of taking inactive pills I just take a week off) so I usually end up with a weekend period :( (this could be due to the depo shot I was on up until 6 months ago). There are ways to change the day you have your period if you should find that you are experiencing weekend periods, but I won't go into that right now.

Good luck to you!

Camden,
I'm the same as you, I get my period on Friday and my heaviest day is on the weekend, which sucks. Somebody explained how to change the start day to me on another post, but I really don't want to change from being a Sunday starter. Is there another way to change it? If you can let me know, thanks!

You can't change the day you get your period unless you change your start day.

Well that sucks, but I can deal with it. Which day do you reccommend I take the pill so I'll start on like Mon or Tue and be done by the weekend?

I'm not sure how well changing your start day works, but assuming your periods always do and always will come six days after your last pill (right now you take your last pill on Saturday night and get a period on the Friday), I would think that you would want to change to a Wednesday or Thursday start, take your last active pill on the Tuesday or Wednesday (depending on the day you started) and have your period start on either the Monday or Tuesday. To change the start day would mean that you finish the active pills in your current pack (on a Saturday right?) and take either no pills or the inactive pills until you start the new pack on either the Tuesday or Wednesday (this means you will only take 2-3 of the inactive pills this month).

I'm not sure but (in my opinion) I'm thinking that since you want to change your start date by so many days you may want to do it over a couple of months by starting each new pack a day or two early to see how it goes. I would think that such a drastic change would confuse your body a little and cause spotting or something and it would take your body a month or more to adjust. You also probably don't want to change all at once because I guess there is the possibility that your period may decide to come 3-4 days after your last pill and you will end up with a weekend period again!

Your correct in assuming when I start, last active pill on Sat and I start my period nearly a week later. However, that makes me weary of doing this if it won't work completely, but I wouldn't mind if I was lighter on the weekend, thats better than heavy.

Do you think switching to another brand will fix this? I'm on Apri now, but I never had this problem when I was on Alesse. I use to start on Wed, and was done by Sat night, but it was light so I didn't mind. Thanks for any advice you can give

I am on Marvelon 21. I can't tell you if switching pills will work because I have never been on any other type of pill. It makes sense that it might make a difference because different pills have different amounts of hormones in them. If you don't want to change your start date you may want to discuss changing pill with your doctor. He/she should be able to answer your question.

On the Marvelon my periods usually last 3-4 days. I have relatively mild cramping and bloating during the days leading up to my period. The first full day of my period is usually the heaviest, if it lasts for three days day three is the lightest, if it last for four days it is virtually non-existent for day three and "returns" for a few hours on day four. Take note that I was on the Depo shot for over 2 years before switching back to the pill so that may play a part in when during the month my period starts and how long they last.

Thank you very much, I will talk with my Doctor the next time I go in, until then I will just deal. :p
