View Full Version : Neuro otologist wants me to take vitamins... (and question for schao)

i went yesterday to the neuro-Ot. for the second time.. he thinks since i have a lot of headaches its some how related to my brain fog.. so he wants me to take magnesium and b-2 supplements every day for a month to see if it will help...

ok... i'm guessing its not going to help.. i straight up told him this, but i'm willing to try it..

the part that makes me mad is i KNOW the brainfog is from an infection i got a few years go.. which i KNOW came from swimming.. yet he keeps telling me i couldnt have gotten an inner ear infection from water, so that means i have no damage in my 'vestibular region'... so what kind of sense does this make?

Anyways i wanted to ask schao: who is your doctor and where do you live? i just read on another topic that your doctor actually understand the brainfog thing... and i mean... i would feel much better if the DR even knew what i was talking about. :o :o :o

Hello,

Brainfog - a spacey feeling, can be caused by migraine and also, if they get bad enough, muscular/tension headaches. Both of these things can be caused by a deficiency in migraine and B vitamins. Rather than being off the wall, he may be on the ball more than he seems. It's actually fairly radical for a doctor to take mineral/vitamin deficiencies in to account. Some migraine attacks are actually treated with intravenous magnesium and I've heard some people say B vitamins help their brainfog.

I don't know if he ran vestibular tests to see if you have damage. If the mag/B vits don't work, you could ask him about drugs to treat migraine. I am sure you have read about MAV on this board.

best,

hbep

Hi Soupyhead--

Have you had any vestibular tests done? An ENG? I had an ENG done and that showed I had damage in my right inner ear. My Dr. said that the disorientation and cognitive problems (brain fog) I have are normal with vestibular problems. I live in the US in Arizona--where are you at?
Sorry to keep this short, but im having sinus surgery today, so we're off to the hospital--wish me luck!

good luck with the surgery! i havent had the really expensive tests done where they blow air into your ears or whatever? but he has done tests like put these goggles on me and balance tests, and says i am fine with those.. but the other test is like $700 i think.. you had it done i believe..? btw i live in florida, but my parents live in arizona, chandler.. what city you in?

Hey soupeyhead--

Thats funny...my parents also live in Chandler, and I live in Phoenix. Yea, I had an ENG done and thats how he found the damage in my right inner ear. I did fine on all the tests with the goggles, following the lights and all of that as well. The doctor I saw out here is Dr. Macias--evidently there aren't many neuro-oto's out there--there are only two in Arizona!
My surgery went well, just trying to recover now--it'll take some time I guess. Do you have insurance to help pay for the ENG?

Take Care,
Sherrie

Yuck - and apparently they're not even that accurate!
I didn't do the water in ears bit because I was scared!

Hehe sorry to butt in! Just wanted to say Schao I'm so glad your surgery went well and hope you're feeling a lot better soon!

Thanks Katkin. Im feeling a bit better, it will just take some time.

Soupyhead--I know its frustrating to get the answers that you want. But I would definitely try the vitamins. Are you still doing exercises? How long have you been doing them? I had to stop doing my exercises since the surgery--he said I should be able to resume in a week or two. Im skeptical about the exercises though--im really just wondering if im a spacey head 24/7--how are the exercises really going to help ya know? I'm definitely going to do them---I just want to feel better right now! This has gone on going on 6 years now-very frustrating. Quick question--when you look at yourself in the mirror, is it like your looking through a bubble or something? ( I know it sounds silly)--but when I look in the mirror thats what it feels like for me--like I cant look at myself clearly? Does that make sense? Maybe thats the disconnected feeling, I dont know. Anyone else reading this feel like that? Of course I could just be going crazy as well...who knows.
My sister lives in Florida as well, in Orlando--where abouts do you live in Fl.?

Take Care,
Sherrie

Soupyhead/Hbep: Aside from the theraputic vitamin deficiencies often looked at by alternative medicine, and the research which relates mag and minor vit b deficiency with migrains, there is of course true Vitamin B deficiency, which is a clinical diagnosis based on low levels within bloodstream, this can effect multiple systems, and the vestibular system is one of the most obvious, however this should diagnosed by a bloodtest, then vitamin B levels raised using a intensive course of injections....So I'd think he was thinking more of the first scenario

As for the swimming, I think the ENT is saying that your inner ear condition could not be caused from swimming - which AFAIK is technically correct, as there is noway the swimming water could get from your middle ear, to your inner ear. More likely is that you got a systemic virus which attacked your innerear via the bloodstream, the same virus could of also caused cold/flu symptoms (including middle ear problems). Obviously, swimming in cold water etc makes catching a virus more likely, but I think thats as far as the link goes.
