Hi everyone,
I am 4 months pregnant and chose to have the triple screening done and the test came back that I am positive for the Cystic Fibrosis gene. I don't know anything about this, I am starting to do some research on this but can anyone help me out and explain it to me. They want the father to go in for a blood test to see if he has the gene too.
Thanks for any responses

Have the father of the child tested. If he's a carrier, there's a 25% (one in four) chance that your child could be born with CF. If he's not a carrier, then there's nothing to worry about -- it takes two carriers (mother and father) to have a cf child.
Friend of mine found out her child has CF and that she was pregnant again. She's going thru testing to see if the child has CF so they can be prepared and if need be, start treatments right away when the child is born.

Thank you for your reply. I can't make him understand that its not the doctors trying to get me in for more tests or anything like that. He says theres nothing to worry about because no one in his family has it. I know that it doesn't matter if they have it or not becuase he might just be a carrier like me and two carriers make a CF baby....

No one in my family (except my 20-month old) has it either. That's what we kept saying over and over again when DS was lifeflighted to a hospital in the city shortly after he was born due to a bowel obstruction caused by meconium illeius (CF). We were fortunate to fine out right away, so we could begin treatment asap. Some people aren't diagnosed until they're a lot older. It's just a simple blood test, if your partner isn't a carrier, then no worries.

My 9 mo old son has CF and there was no family history of it either. Found out during pregnancy that we were carriers because the meconium ileus was seen on ultrasound. Better to find out sooner than later. My husband had a hard time coming to terms with the fact that we are carriers. Maybe your partner is feeling the same way.

have your husband get tested. nobody in my family or my wifes knew about cf. our 2 yr old daughter was diagnosed at birth by the states genetic screen. Since then out syblings have been tested (all now in their thirties). My sister is a carrier, her husband is not. My wifes two sisters are also carriers. Herone sisters husband is a carrier too. the other husband has not yet been tested. we are trying get him to do it. there are approx. 12 million americans who are unknown carriers.
