I am an 18 year old female in college. I have a really hard time actually sitting down and doing my school work. I don't know if it is just that I am not interested in the subject so I can't focus or something else like ADD. Most of the time I plan on doing my work with plenty of time to spair (like over the weekend) but I usually end up doing them at the minute.
I have been looking at some websites about symptomsof add some that I have are; sitting for long periods of time (like movies), bored easily, figgeting, and inpatient. Those are just a few, but the ones that I really notice.
Not sure if these symtoms mean I should get tested, or they are just common things that happen to be symptoms of ADD.
thanks for any advice

Well, Emily, they are common complaints. It is a matter of severity, really. Everyone has a harder time focusing on things they aren't interested in. Someone with ADD finds it nearly impossible.
The main question that I have to ask is: how long has this been a problem for you? Just recently or was it always there? What were you like in elementary school?

THis has been noticable for a little longer than a year. I really started having problems with this during my senior year of high school, but I just assumed it was "senioritis". I am now in college and I still have problems. I thought that maybe I was having problems with doing my work last semester because it was my first semester of college, I was away from home and not very happy. NOw I transfered to a different school and I am living at home with the same problem.
you asked about elemetary school, I don't remeber any problems. I have always had decent grades but never did much work. I don't know if ADD has to do with Genetics, but my brother was diagnosed at a yound age (elemetary school).

I came here to post almost the exact same thing, so im gonna chime in with my potential problem. I am also in college, and have all the signs you mentioned in the first post. And I will sit down and try to read my assignment, and my eyes will go over the words and i will read them, but my mind will be activly thinking about all sorts of other things... I am not sure if this is just dis-interest, or if there is something else going on. but it gets difficult to get ready for an exam, if i read it and dont retain any of it. its getting pretty bad.

Well, for both of you, the reason I asked about elementary school and how long you've had this problem is this. ADD, by definition, must begin at a young age (technically, age 7). So, for this to be ADD, it must have always been there and not just developed recently.
That said, though, it isn't uncommon for individuals with ADD to compensate for it in their younger years until they reach a challenging environment where they are no longer able to compensate. Some patients aren't diagnosed until their adult years. However, the problems were always there in retrospect.

Thanks for replying, I was wondering if you think these symptoms are worth while to see a doctor? I am assuming you have had experience with ADD or someone in your family has. If I should see a doctor what kind shuld I see? like a psychiatrist or something else? Also how is it diagnosed?
Hey Exile- yea it is really bad having problems with focusing on school work in college. My grades are too great right now and it really pisses me off because my classes aren't that hard, If I put the time into them I should be able to get A's in most of my classes and that is the worst part of this problem.

I would think that the best place to start would be with the counselors at college. I expect they have someone you could talk to in the health center ("quack shack" we used to call it). It's probably best that you have a thorough evaluation by a psychologist.
Yes, you could start with a psychiatrist but I don't recommend it. More likely than not, if you go to a psychiatrist, you are going to walk out of there with a prescription for something. That isn't necessarily for the best. There are some new health warnings coming out about some of the meds so you don't want to jump into medication too quickly.
I have to say, though, that if your symptoms are recent onset, you may not be dealing with ADD at all. Is it possible that your classes bore you?

I never thought of going to the school doctors, that;s a good idea, I will go to them and see what they suggest.

Hi Emily,
I'm a 22 year old female in college and I know exactly what you are going through! it is the worst thing in the world! I struggle so much with doing my homework. I've been like this for as long as I can remember, but I did okay until school got hard which is now basically. I got As and Bs in high school, not because i studied, but because I just winged them. Now in college i can't do that. I've tryed and tryed and tryed but it hasn't been working. I just get distracted and don't do the homework which is not good. I went to the doctor the other day and I got diagnosed for inattentive ADD. I am now on Concerta. This is my 2nd day and so far it seems good but we'll see. I think if you go to a doctor that would really help and you may very well have ADD like myself. Medication helps a lot trust me! over the last couple days I've been able to focus a lot better, am more motivated, am less moody, and I listen a lot better too. So I recommend that you go to a doctor whenever you can! it will be worth it!

Hey PrincessBride22 I just saw your post.
I was actually diagnosed today with inattentive ADD and put on Adderall. My doc said I should start seeing results very soon, and I hope I do. I onlyhave about 7 weeks of school left so hopefully I will be getting some results in time to help with my grades!
Anyway thanks for replying and hopefully concerta will keep working for you!
