Hello everyone, first time posting under this section. The reason I am is because I just found out that my father may be diabetic. He went to a doctor just recently because he wasn't feeling well, turned out he had extremely high blood pressure. He got medication to control it, but his doctor told him that she would like to run blood test on him because she thinks he might be diabetic. My question is, what exactly does this mean? If he is, what type of steps must he take and what changes will he go through? I guess any help on this subject would help out. Thanks.

There are some simple blood tests that the doctor can take that will determine whether or not he has diabetes. Depending on the severity of the disease, he may be given a diet that controls Sugar, fat, and carbohydrates. If it is found that his pancreas is not producing sufficient insulin he may be given a medication pill like glucophage/metformin for helping him to stabilize his blood sugar levels. If he is found to have no pancreas activity he may be given injectable insulin to function in the place of his pancreas. The blood pressure will have to be treated and the doctor may put him on a pill to reduce his cholesterol level as well. The triglycerides level will be monitored which indicates a lot about how the diabetes is progressing. Most all of this information is gotten from a simple blood test every 3 or 4 months, and he may be told to get a blood glucose monitoring kit so that he can check his own blood sugar at home, to make sure he has stable blood sugar levels. At first this will seem very difficult to do and it will take practice to control the diabetes so that it does not cause organ damage to the heart, liver, and kidneys.
