Three weeks ago I received a large post card from the Marilyn & James Simons Early Lung Program suggesting that I take a low-doage lung CT Scan (a doctors prescription was not necessary). I went, paid $250, took the 10 minute test and it was negative. I plan to go every year. According to the hospital this Scan can detect very early cancer which gives you 70%+ chances for a cure versus 13% when it's detected using conventional x-rays. I tried to take this test two years ago but the time there were only 2 of these machines in all NYC. A former co-worker (smoker) went for x-rays every 18 months. Her most recent x-ray showed a Mass and she is 3B (inoperable). It would seem that conventional x-rays are not the answer for early detection. It should be noted that the $250 is not reimbursed by Insurnce but who cares. While there, I took the same test for cardiac screening ($250) and I discovered that I had above adverage deposits in my artery. Since I'm now aware of the problem, I immediately went on a very low fat diet, exercise more and have increased my intake of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants plus taking several herbs. I guess preventive medicine is the really remedy for good health. Now if only I could give up cigarettes (but I'm now down to less than a pack a day and hope to quit soon). Good Health to Everyone
