View Full Version : Peripheral Neuropathy

Hi all. I posted my story earlier, but now have questions about peripheral neuropathy.
Just to back track a bit, I have had 5 major spine surgeries before the diagnosis of diabetes. I entered the hospital November 2003 for leg problems and found that I had blood clots which were surgicaly removed. I wasl also diagnosed with Diabetes Type II.
After the surgery on my leg I was in recovery. The numbness, pain in leg did not go away. It was felt that the surgery was successful, but the complaints that I had were not related to the surgery. It was either due to problems stemming from the lower back or from the diabetes. I had an EMG done and showed peripheral neuropathy. Here I am 1 1/2 years post surgery/diagnosis and still have major problems with the left leg. There is pain, numbness from the knee down to the foot. I have trouble wearing regular shoes at this point. I was put on amitriptyline for the neuropathy, but all it did was put me to sleep. Did not resolve any of the problems with the leg on symptoms. I have tried excercise, mainly aqua therapy, doing excercises in a swimming pool. No relief noted.
Anyone have any suggestions &/or thoughts on peripheral neuropathy. Thanks as always for listening and your input.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was on Neurontin several times and had problems with it. The first time I was on it, Iwas taking 900 mg 3 times a day for a total of 2700 mg per day. I was acting strange to say the least. Did things that I could not remember the next day. Then after som time, I was put on a lower dosage of 300 mg per day. They thought that the high dose had an adverse effect on me. But the lower dosage I found did nothing for me. So there must be some other possible medications for me. Will ask the next time I see my endocronologist. But thanks for the input.

A friend's sister has peripheral neuropathy resulting from an old spine injury and was unable to stand on feet without pain. Someone suggested she put "Vitamin E oil" on her feet. She is now able to stand on her feet without pain. I have no idea whether this is a miracle or what but she has relief.
