What type of pain should I expect following a diagnostic laparoscopy? Is it bad enough that you have to take pain meds or anything?

Pain is very personal...no two people's tolerance is the same.

You do not say what procedure you are having, but in general lap surgeries are much easier on the body and much easier to recover from. I can tell you that if you are obese that they have to push harder with the instruments sometimes to "reach" things and you may have some bruising...You would have to be at least 50 lbs overweight before you would even need to think about the bruising issue.

The major complaint I have always had with laps is shoulder pain (this is caused by the gas they use trying to escape...for some reason it always effects the shoulders). The doc will prescribe pain medication after surgery that should more than take care of this problem....usually something like darvocet. It lasts no more than a couple of days and then you should be fine.

Good Luck!

Hi,

I have had several laparoscopys and you are going to be sore for 3-5 days. You have to walk the soreness out,if you sit around you will be worse. I have had 2 laps b/c i have endometriosis. Also you may experience shoulder pain due to air they put in you during surgery. Good luck with whatever your having done. Keep us posted. God Bless
