 I am new to this board and have read thru several posts. I have been typeII for 1 1/2 yrs now. I take metformin 2 X daily. My doc recently put me on Lisinopril and Lipitor as preventative meds. My BG's are pretty much in the normal ranges. My Cholesterol was borderline on my last blood work. I have started having muscle pain in my right arm. I have read that Lipitor can cause muscle pain and am now perplexed. Doc tells me not to stop the meds but the pain gets almost unbearable in my arm. Other message boards I have read state that Lipitor is more dangerous than beneficial....any comments?? please

I am on lipitor and I hate it.
However, I have a lot of other problems. Blood sugar, thyroid, fms etc...
Everything I have can cause muscle pain and everything I have has some sort of connection. I have been on lipitor for about a year and my muscle pain has been getting progressively worse.
I feel like I have been lifting weights for two weeks straight.
I don't know if the lipitor is adding to the muscle problem or if I am just another year older.

I am not sure the pain I am having is muscle related. The pain centers more in my elbow but moves up to my shoulder and upper back. I can't think of anything I have done physically that would cause my arm to hurt this bad for this long. Perplexing! I have stopped the Lipitor for now. After reading some of the posts here though, it sounds like it may be several months before it gets better, if infact it is the med.

If you have muscular pains when taking any statin like lipitor or zocor my doctor said you should immediately stop the medication.
I was on Zocor for 6months no muscle pain but I was getting a cold or flu every 4 to 6 weeks on average. I stopped the Zocor 3months ago and have not been sick since.

My husband is on Lipitor and has problems with it but the doctor will not stop the drug. He had a rash that would not go away and we looked up the side effects and saw that Lipitor can cause that. Doctor said he never heard of such a thing and just to keep taking it. Then husband started getting muscle aches and doctor said it was most definately unrelated. Now husband has elevated liver enzymes and doctor is not concerned. Husband takes his cue from doc and won't stop medication without doctor's consent. Nothing I say helps and honestly, I am past the point of nagging about this. But, just wanted to add my two cents about my frustration with this drug.

When I was diagnosed with type II last December, the doctor put me on Actos and Lipitor. I worked to change my diet, and started an exercise program.
After about a month, I started to have pain in my upper back muscles. Initially, I didn't think it was a matter for concern, since I didn't have dark urine, fever, swelling or other signs of muscle breakdown. But after another month, as the same amount of exercise got harder and harder to do, and the pain worsened, I decided to discontinue the Lipitor and see what happened.
In less than a week, the pain was better, though even now about 5 weeks later, my upper back still hurts if I've been standing or walking for several hours (late in the day on a work day, for example). But the muscles are not so clenched tight as they were, and if I sit back for awhile, they relax. Then I can go on with my late day exercise, etc.
Also, in just a few days after stopping Lipitor, my exercise intolerance improved very noticeably. That leads me to believe that I made the right choice. I've been able to go on gradually increasing the intensity and duration of exercise, and am now up to 40 minutes at my training heart rate.
I guess I'll find out tomorrow whether my doctor agrees. The way I see it, though, is that for me the choice was between continuing exercise or continuing Lipitor. Since December, I've lost 25 lbs and my fasting blood glucose levels have fallen from 210-220 down to 100-120. The diet, exercise, and weight loss should also improve my cholesterol. I'm not willing to risk the statin side effects anymore.
