I have a friend who eats yogurt and her diabetes is pretty high in the evening hours I was wondering if perhaps yogurt has anything to do with this?
Does anyone know what effect yogurt has on blood sugars?
Any help is greatly appreciated...thank you all, Crysc

The effect yougurt has on blood sugar depends on whether it is sweetened with sugar. A 125 ml container (4.4oz) of sugar sweetened yogurt contains about 25 grams of carbohydrate. About the same as 2 pieces of bread. So it wil increase blood sugar substantially. A similar amount of unsweetened or articificially sweetened yogurt contains about 10 grams of carbs (mainly lactose). So the effect on blood sugar is much smaller, but still significant.

Cheers,

Mark

I had gestational diet controlled diabetes during my last pregnancy. I pretty much self diagnosed it and was controlling it on my own. I kept a food journal and took it with my when I went to see a nutritionist. According to my journal, I was doing everything right except....the yogurt I was eating in the morning with my mini-wheats. I know that the mini-wheats were bad but I only had about six and thought that the yogurt was a protein and it would offset the carbs. Turns out that it wasn't a protein and I was just adding more carbs, therefore causing my sugar level to spike.

I'm not sure if plain yogurt is okay but as the last poster said, sweetened yogurt has sugar and even the artificial ones have fruit and fruit is a sugar. Your friend may want to try having the unsweeted or artificially sweetened yogurt with a protein as this will slow down how fast the sugars are metabolised.
