View Full Version : Update on my sister

I have been away from the board for awhile. My sister has been home for about 2 months now and there had been little change in her condition - until now.

We have now started hospice. At first my brother-in-law told me it was to help with the pain and that she could get off hospice if things got better. I think he was just trying to get me upset. On Friday I went to see her and he told me the truth. She is dying a little bit everyday. She will not be getting out of hospice. The hospice team did their evaluation and said she will be gone in less than six months. A change has come over her. She is actually more active. She wanted us to take her to see a movie on Sunday and we did. It is like she wants to do as much as she can before...(sob)

She called me today and asked me to be the 2nd person on the Durable Medical Power of Attorney. She wants to have a long talk with me this weekend. She also asked me to pick her up some note paper so she can start writing her goodbye letters. All I have done today is cry.

Can some one give me some advice on what I should say to her this weekend or just listen and let her tell me what she needs to hear. I have a feeling I will be back on this board more often over the next few months.

I thought I had accepted this but I DON'T WANT HER TO DIE!!! She is my best friend. She has always been there for me.

Thanks for letting me babble.

Dear Babbles, YOu are such a treasure for your sister. I am sure she is comforted with your presence. When I felt so helpless....with my husband dying I came on here. Walter told me , that 'just being there' for him was a great help, for my husband. Walter, is very sick, too..so, I was sure he knew! Hearing that from Walter carried me thourgh alot, that happened later.
With my dying husband, we all took turns...just listening to him. He gave personal things away to different people. There were days between these moods. He would swing back and forth. He would try to think 'hopeful'..but, then would go back to what he 'knew' was really going to happen.
We always just let him decide what he wanted to talk about or to do or not do. We let him have all of the control possible, as long as he wanted it. Other times he just NEEDED to be quite, and taken care of.
oh, how I wish I could help you, my dear. I give you my prayers for wisdom of what to do and say. And, for comfort for you all. hugs Donna

Dear Babbles~
I am sorry to hear what you are going through. I read your post & thought WOW! I could have written the same thing. I just went through the "TALK" with my sis who is also receiving Hospice Care. Please keep us posted on how you & your sis & family are doing. My sis is 43, I am 38 & we too are BEST FRIENDS.
I guess we should just be thankful that we have had such a great relationship with a loved one. We are both very lucky to have sisters. There is nothing like them.
