I woke up this morning, and as I was clearing mucus out of my chest, blood came up with it in about 4 seperate coughs. It was very shocking. I went to the Emergency room, and they said it was most likely a broken blood vessel from hard coughing, as I just got over the flu and was coughing very hard for about 4 days straight. He said it was simular to a bloody nose. My x-rays were good, and they said not to worry. Anyone ever experience this, and how long did it take to clear? Thanks.

Hello, i am not a doc or anything but i have a 14 yr old who has just had a similar thing, she is asthmatic and where she could not breathe and clear her phlegm she ended up being sick for 3 days running and each time she sicked up bright red blood. I tried not to panick and took her to the doc after the 3 days as i knew she needed steroid tablets. I told the doc about the blood and she just said that she also had broken a blood vessell by coughing to hard and i was not to worry, she did not seem at all bothered to be honest but it really is frightening isn't it. Once the steriod tablets took a hold it all stopped. Hope this is of some help.

Last time I had pnemonia the same thing happend to me (yes it's really freaky when it happens). My husband rushed me to the emergency and they said the same ... broken blood vessel from coughing too hard .It really paniced me to but the doctor assured me that it was normal considering how hard I coughed . Good luck feel better soon !!
Try holding a pillow against you if your coughing really hard it helps !
