Hi, I hope this is the right forum but anyway here is my problem. Most of my swallowing problems are at night after I lay down. Its like I have to swallow every 5 seconds and sometimes I have to sit up because its like I get choked and lose my breath, and I'm still awake. I also have a lot of tightness in my chest but all heart tests I've had have come back normal. Anyone else do this? I really don't understand what could be causing this. Any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Check out the GERD board. Sounds like reflux.

I found that elevating the head of my bed about 4" keeps stomach acids and food from flowing up the esophagus --- It helps!!

I have the same thing and it is gerd. Try elevating the head of your bed and take zantac. You should see your dr as its not something to treat lightly. Your Dr can also give you stronger meds if the zantac doesn't help.

My symptoms are weird. I have checked the definitions of GERD and other issues with swallowing problems. I only have one symptom which is I feel I have a knife stuck in my chest that moves up and down my throat from the bottom of my diaphragm to the back of my throat. I am on a prescribed acid reducer but I am scared something else may be wrong any suggestions. By the way just had the light ran down my throat and doc says all looks ok.
thanks:confused:

Ronnifer,

It is best to get an endoscopy exam --- your esophagus is about 9 1/2 inches long and a light exam is not very complete!!

It sounds like you lack magnesium in your diet.
Lacking it can cause swallowing problems but Doctors don't test for it??
