Ingrown toenails are usually caused by improperly fitting shoes which place undue pressure on the sides and surface of the nail plate. They are also casued by fungal infection of the nails.
Be sure your toes are not 'squished' together in your shoes and that the toenails are not pressing against the inside of the toe of the shoe.
Soak the nails in a mixture of 1qt warm (jacuzzi temperature) water, 1 cup table salt and 1/4 cup distilled vinegar for no less than 10 minutes. Dry off your feet and use an ingrown toenail file to get underneath the nail plate at the side and then pull the file foward to remove as much of the ingrown portion of nail that you can. You will have to file it this way several times to get any relief. If the nails dry out and become hard again, soak your feet until they soften and repeat the process. You should be able to find an ingrown toenail file at your local beauty supply house.
