Last August I fell on a ceramic floor and hurt my tailbone. For about a month I was in pain with it and have no doubt that I may have fractured it. Anyway, while I was healing from this, I noticed a terrible ache in my rectum, especially after a bowel movement. I wrote here and asked if I could have hurt myself 'down there' when I fell, and the response was so comforting - several of you wrote and said that yes, it's normal to ache like that 'in there' from a hurt tailbone as some of you have experienced it yourselves. Well, it eventually got better and went away and I forgot all about it until now - a couple of weeks ago I started feeling that same ache. It started after a bowel movement and has been there off and on ever since. At first I was worried but then a few days ago it occured to me that it felt the same way it did after my fall. That was 6 months ago and I haven't had a problem until now. I did read some of the answers I received to my original post back in September, and a couple of you said that once a tailbone has been fractured or broken, a bowel movement can move it out of place and cause things to hurt again. Granted, it doesn't feel anything like it did when I fell but it's still achy just the same. My question is - Is that really what I could have done? And how long does it take for a tailbone to heal, if it ever does? I would think after 6 months it would be just fine, but from what some of you told me, it never really goes away and could always cause a problem? Is that true?

To kellie2,
I agree with kiki lou.........,
I hate to say this..............., YEP ! I DO think it's true TOO !
I am into my number SIX -th year, in pain, after a fall in the middle of the night ! I flipped over backwards, and my TBone landed on the corner of the bed ! OOOOUCH ! My husband wanted to take me to the ER, but I took some pain med., and made it through the night.
The next morning I went to my GP Doctor. He did an X-ray, and said,
' Nope ! It's not broken ! '
I went home and took pain medicine, I could hardly walk or do anything else, to say the least............,
After a couple of weeks, I fell into his office going..........,' Heeeeeeeeelp ! '
So, he sent me to the hospital to have a CT Scan. The X-ray Tech. showed me on the screen that there was a bright spot, about the size of a quarter,
right at the end of my coccyx bone. The Doctors said there was nothing they could be do. I cried all the way home.
As soon as I felt some better, I went to visit my Father-in-Law, who is a
GP Doctor, (unfortunately he retired these days !)
He and my Husband went over to the hospital and He read the CT Scan,
so that he could better explain things to me.
Basically, he said that the piece of bone had chipped off the end of the tailbone, but was still somewhat attached to the muscles and nerves around IT, so when I moved, IT moved, and this was the cause of the pain.
Much to my total disapointment, he told me that the Doctors around here do not know much at all to do about this condition.
During these years I still have what I call ' flair-up's ' ! Most of the time, it depends on what I do, exercise wise. Also, I have a wonderful, patient and kind Husband. (Know what I mean.)
When these ' flair-up's ' started to occur, and I asked my Father-in-Law about it. He says it could be Arthritis,(which I have already), or scar tissue
that has formed since my fall.
I do tend to agree with him, because when the weather is wet and cold, the pain is worse.
One thing I will share with you, from my own experience, is.........,
I take a stool softener and Magnesium, every day, and I NEVER allow myself to become constipated.
Depending on where you live, you may find a Doctor who can help you. A couple of suggestions.., a ' Pain Control Doctor ', or find a Doctor that you like, who is kind and understanding, and see if he will supply you with the RIGHT medications, to help you deal with this.
I hope, in some way, I have been of some help to you.
One thing's for SURE, I NEVER leave home without my doughnut cushion !
For ME, it's been a hell of a life, for six years of living my life......, STANDING !
I would love to hear from you.......,
Take Care,
Gee Gee

To kiki lou, From Gee Gee
I would like to hear more about your experience with this awful condition,
only if you would like to.
I am a new member, and I have been searching for a post on this subject.
At least I have found two people who know what I am going through.
Like the saying goes.........,
' We never really know folks are going through, until we have walked in someone elses shoes. '
Take Care,

Thanks to both of you. I did want to ask you GeeGee, is the pain you feel just in your tailbone, or do you also feel pain or aching in the rectum, too? Because I don't feel it so much in my tailbone area as I do inside....

Hi Kellie,
I think if it's hard for you to tell exactly where the pain is coming from......,
personally, if I were you, I would be on my way to see my Doctor.
What kind of Doctor did you see, when you fell and had your initial injury ?
I recently had a lot of GI tests done, and anything like that causes what I call, a ' flair up '. I am still recouping from the tests.
Let me know if there is ANYTHING I can do to help you. And, I only speak from my own experiences.
