So this is not a commercial plug for any dentist, treatment or therapy...this is me, sincerely sharing my story.
For 4 years, I have suffered greatly, with TMJ and all of its various symptoms (racking neck pain, intense headaches, inability to talk, chew, etc).
Over the 4 years I have spent tens of thousands of dollars, and hundreds of hours, on everything imaginable...hyponosis, accupuncture, splints, specialists (Columbian Presbyterian Myofacial Pain Clinic at $500 a pop, a "leading" TMJ practicioner in NYC,) chiropractic, tooth filing, TENS Units, massage therapists, special diets, all natural supplements and yoga (and most of these all at the same time). I still suffered. I do believe that all of this effort made it manageable, but it interfered with my job, my love life, my life in general. You all know the story.
So in November, I gave up. I figured I would just accept the pain and hope that the acceptance would make it easier. Then I went to a new dentist simply for a cleaning. He asked his general questions, and I told him about the TMJ, but I also told him I was unwilling to discuss it, because of my new "acceptance". He told me 3 things: (it was because I had white fillings in my back teeth, I had a strong spasm of the right tmj that hadn't been broken, and that I had, in the past, been ill fit for a nightguard) All before I opened my mouth and all true. He adjusted one tooth, fit me for a new nightguard, and sent me to a new physical therapist.
3 months later, although I still have some discomfort, on the whole, I wake up smiling every day because I don't wake up with a headache. My family, friends, co workers, all comment on my healing, and I feel like I have my life back. I owe it to Dr. Thomas Magnani and Yoav of EMH physical therapy on {address removed - please read the posting rules}.
If you are in NY, or the tri-state, I would put all the money I have spent in the past behind these guys because FINALLY, something is working! I finally feel like there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I'm 30, and to have through that I was going to live that way for the rest of my life was torture!
Good luck

Good to hear you are feeling better. Did your dentist explain why a white filling in the back teeth cause muscle spasms??? Or did I misread your post?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I had "white" fillings put in the back molars. These are much softer. As a grinder, and a clencher, I completely flattened out those white fillings, leaving me with an unsupported and very uneven back bite. This just made the grinding worse.
