Hi everyone,

Lately I have been experiencing the following problems (at least since November). I went to my GP and he thinks it is just anxiety. I didn't agree, and as sort of a concession, he is sending me to an allergist to check out an allergy connection. I am not so sure. Please look at my symptoms list and let me know if you think it could be GERD:

* chest tightness after meals
* wheezing in morning and evening that makes it hard to breath
* frequent sore throat
* frequent sneezing/congestion
* frequent burping
* eczema
* lump in throat
* trouble swallowing (feels like my throat is closing)
* anxiety
* sudden, sharp throat and upper back pain

Of course all of these symptoms just make my anxiety worse so I feel like I am in a vicious circle. I just think it is something more than anxiety. Will an allergist check for GERD?

Thanks for your help!!!

Hi
I have a lot of the same symptoms and I am being treated for gerd. I haven't yet had tests but I and my Dr are pretty sure. Why dont you try taking zantac or antacids and see if it makes a difference?
I don't know if an allergist will check for gerd or not, sorry.

Hi,

Listening to your symptoms, it sounds very close to what I have went through.
In late 2002, I was diagnosed with asthma, however after the wheezing stopped - I developed other horrible symptoms. One ended up being the inability to eat. Everytime that I ate- within 30 minutes to 3 hours afterwards- I would feel as if someone was crushing my esophagus. I also had horrible redness (facial flushing).
Anyway, after several ER visits, 2 hospitalizations and a trip to a big research hospital- It was discovered that I had vocal cord dysfunction. It was triggered by my reflux, by my discovered life threatening allergic reactions (to dust mites- above all things!) and by my sinus problems. An allergist frequently knows about this condition- and can do some pulmonary functions tests if you are having active symptoms to look into this. At the research hospital that I went to- they actually put a scope through my nostrils and down to visualize my vocal cords.
I would encourage you to look this condition up and see how closely your symptoms match. Of course- you definitely need to keep your appointment with the doctor. Only they can truly diagnose you!

Hope this helps
