Has anyone had any success with Trileptal for nerve pain that is considered "central"? If so, how long did it take to notice an effect, and are there any troublesome side effects?

Hello Linda

I was just prescribed Trileptal today from my neurologist. I did a little research on the internet on this medication as I always do before starting any new med. I also take Topamax but I am supposed to wean off this med as I start Trileptal. After what I read on the internet I think that I will have to wait about a week before I can start this new medication. I really don't know how my body will react to it, and I don't even want to drive while starting this. I have even read that some people have photosensitivity while taking this med. I have also read that one can develop Hyponatremia - not enough salt in your blood. Gosh, I sure don't need to start craving chips and junk food...lol But I am also concerned that I might have some problem's with my blood sugar's while taking this medication, so I will have to keep a close eye on them as I am pre-diabetic.

But I do hope that someone does come along and shares their experinece and knowledge about Trileptal. Best of Luck to you.

I have been taking trileptal for 6 months now. I haven't had a problem with the lack of salt. I still don't salt anything nor eat chips or other salty foods and haven't had a problem. It works pretty well except sometimes I have problems remembering the names of things and people (even those I have known 20+ years). My biggest problem is that it just isn't working well any more. I take 2 600mg tablets a day. And it's really expensive. $204 a month and my insurance only will pay half. I tried taking less, and can't stand the pain.

Cairan.
