Hi,
It is extremely unusual for someone your age to have ALS, although it has happened. However, let me put you to some ease. ALS is not painful.
It usually starts in two forms: 1) In the extremeties (arms and legs) which one usually notices because either the foot starts dropping down and they have a big fall- plus they start to have muscle deterioration or 2) It starts with problems with speech and swallowing which is called "Bulbar Onset".
You definitely need to have your symptoms checked out by a specialist- but I would relax some about the possiblity of ALS. As I said before, ALS (especially in the earlier stages is not painful at all. In the advanced stages (which you definitely wouldn't have- because you would know it as would everyone else!- some people might complain of pain but it is most often muscle spasms that a muscle relaxant will take care of and not pain meds.
Wish you the best

You haven't written on the site in a while - I have the same exact symptoms, how did your tests turn out?
