The problem is that everytime i walk there is a clicking noise i nmy right ear. This only happens when im walking it doesnt happen when i chew or when i am not walking. So i dont know exactly what it is and nobody has posted about something like that.
If you have any ideas it would be appreciated. I am 16 years old and its been bugging me for 2 weeks now it has also affected me mentally.
The probel only occurs when i min movement, never happens when im sitting down. Only when i mwlaking or running.
And also i have begun to tihnk that maybe it has somethign to do with my jaw or some joints. Any help wpuld be appreciated.
Thank you.

Adam: Don't know if you have received any replies, but I'm going through the same thing, maybe by telling you what I am experiencing we can figure this out. The worst thing for me is that I can't determine exactly what causes it. Sometimes it's only when I'm walking, others it's only when I'm sitting, somedays it's constant, others it doesn't click at all. Originally I thought it might be fluid in my inner ear, because of the clicking when sitting and not when standing, but according to the doctor, it is most likely a muscle spasm in my inner ear. I didn't even know ears had muscles. The only solution I've been given is to have the muscle severed, which scares me to death. But let me tell you, somedays, I could sever the muscle myself I think because it DRIVES ME CRAZY. I can't sleep, concentrate, you name it. However I am 52 years old, so you are a great deal younger than I am. Honestly, I would rather be totally deaf in that ear than put up with it. Let me know how you're doing and if your symptoms change. I would appreciate any type of feedback because right now, jamming an icepick into my ear to stop it, is sounding very tempting. IT IS MAKING ME THAT NUTS.

I haven't seen a dentist Maughan, but have considered it. I don't experience any pain, just constant clicking. I also thought mine might be caused by fluid because I sleep on my right side always, and at one time it actually only clicked when I sat up after lying down, but then there are times when it has clicked only when lying down. Everything I have tried to do to stop it has failed. Everything I thought might be causing it I've stopped and the clicking has only continued and gotten worse. The muscle spasm thing fits better than anything else I've been told. Unfortunately the solution is to have the muscle severed and that does scare me. Honestly, the clicking now is constant and deafening and is starting to feel like torture. I can't sleep, hear, concentrate, think, I go from getting angry to crying, it's just the worst thing I've ever experienced. It's constant noise that I can't get away from or even relief from, like someone screaming into my ear ALL THE TIME. It seems like the more I try to ignore it, the louder it gets. The muscle severing thing is my only hope I guess. Right now, it scares me more to think of ramming my head through a wall or an icepick into my ear, than having the surgery. That's how desperate I feel sometimes. I have to do something because this is driving me crazy. I sympathize with you and anyone experiencing anything like this, whether it's ringing, buzzing, whatever. People just don't realize how paralyzing something like this is until they have it----I know I didn't.

Maughan: With husband in Marine Corps, I had to go to a doctor on base and was told only that I was experiencing a muscle spasm in my inner ear. He gave me a list of causes, everything from listening to loud music when I was younger to allergies. However nothing he said really made sense to me. He gave me muscle relaxers, which didn't help and made me feel terrible. After that, he told me my only solution was to have the muscle severed. I'm waiting until my husband gets back from Iraq (if I can stand it that long) because I'm not having this guy cutting into my ear until I get a second opinion. I really do feel for you because as I said before, you are alot younger than me, so this must be so frustrating for you. Especially given the fact that it seems like no 2 doctors tell suffer-ers the same thing. My doctor did say that I should be "glad it wasn't TMJ", because alot of people have to just learn to live with it. Let me know how you're doing!

I know exactly what you mean about no one really understanding Maughan. It's like noise that you cannot shut off or get away from and my family doesn't understand either. I hope you can find the cause and get some answers because I don't want to see you bounced back and forth between dentists and ents. Maybe you'll get lucky and find a good one. The base doctors I saw, I knew was only making a GUESS as to my problem. Honestly, I get more help and information from this board than I did from him and actually heard about the muscle spasm thing on this board FIRST and then the doctor confirmed. Please let me know what you find out, so we can compare notes.

Molly: You deserve some kind of an award for tolerence. My ear clicking started a little over a year ago and it has paralyzed me. I can't think, concentrate, sleep and when the clicking is really rolling, I can't hear. I would appreciate so much hearing your complete story. For instance, when it began was it constant, do you have days when it doesn't do it at all, etc. Because one of the most frustrating things for me (aside from the clicking), is trying to figure out if there is anything I am doing to cause it, because some days, it clicks constantly and others it doesn't. Well, except for the last month----now it's constant. Prior to that, I got relief everytime I would lay down, even that doesn't work anymore. I found out about the muscle spasm in inner ear thing from this board----I didn't even know ears had muscles. I told the doctor I saw and he agreed and gave me a low dose muscle relaxant, that didn't work and made me feel like crap. My only other option is having the muscle severed. Initially, that scared me, but it looks like it's coming down to that, or me ending up jamming an icepick into my ear. Yes, it is driving me that crazy. You really need to consider all of the options you are given carefully, as well as the after effects, alot more than I do. Because I'm 52 years old and if going deaf in that ear is my option to get the clicking to stop-----------BRING IT ON. I stopped listening to my husbands voice along time ago anyway. However, if I were 20, my feelings would be different. Please let me know what you find out and again, if you have the time to tell me the specifics of your problem, I would really appreciate it. I've learned more from people on this board than I have my worthless doctor, so maybe your experiences might help me and mine might help you.

gosh i cant even think of when this started... but i used to get ear infections all the time when i was younger. those eventually stopped. and then i got on all kind of meds for allergies and mucus thinnning meds. still, nothing seemed to stop the clicking. doctors would look in my ears and say it looks fine.. i never realized that it could actually be the jaw and my ear. im the same as you.. some days i barely notice it, other days it bugs me all day. some days it gives me headaches. i think part of it may be that i grit my teeth sometimes without even realizing im doing it.
its basically become a part of me, that i dont know what it would be like if i didnt have this clicking in my ear. i wonder how much that would change how i feel each day
oh well, hopefully i can see someone about this and have them check me out
goodluck to you as well

Molly, thanks for the info. I am a little confused, or maybe just stupid, but I just can't understand how jaw problems would bring out this clicking noise. That's part of the frustration I mentioned in my last post. I thought maybe I do have problems with my teeth, bite and jaw, and then a few days later, the clicking stopped for a day or two. I was so happy. That lasted 2 whole days and then the clicking began again. It doesn't make sense that my jaw problems stopped for 2 days, I would think that would be a constant. That has also been my hesitation in having the muscle severed. I can't imagine a muscle spasm that just clears up all of a sudden and then starts up again and why isn't my left ear having a spasm. I also read that sometimes ears produce this sticky mucus substance that make snapping noises when certain sounds hit the ear, but I can sit in a completely silent room and my ear clicks out of control. I also thought I might have a problem with my Eust. tube, maybe caused by harshly clearing my throat constantly. What all this does is clarify how "iffy" certain treatments can become. If I end up having my muscle severed and the clicking doesn't stop, I'll blow my brains out and probably the doctors as well. One thing is for sure, NOBODY can imagine what this is like, noise you can't get away from is torture. Keep in touch!!!!

hey ariel-
it seems like when you bite/chew and what not you put pressure on that part of your ear.. so i guess that is the connection?
i have noticed that i bite down a lot more than i realized, ive been trying not to, but it is a habit
do you ever get headaches?

Hi Molly: Thanks for the info. You really have made me think and consider how hard I bite down, especially since one of my habits is biting and eating ice cubes and hard candy. YES, I do get headaches and there are somedays when I feel like I'm walking around with a bucket on the right side of my head. Those days I really was convinced I had fluid in my inner ear. But then the following day, everything was fine. The first doctor I went to blamed it on high blood pressure. No medical person I went to ever even considered something being wrong with my ear, even though the clicking was my main complaint. That's why the TMJ and muscle spasm thing didn't even enter my mind. Having a husband in the Marine Corps, means I have to utilize the doctors on base unless THEY determine I need to see a specialist or medical treatment they cannot provide. So while some might disagree, I think that puts me at a slight disadvantage. My favorite visit was my last, when I asked the doctor if the clicking could be caused by a muscle spasm in my ear and he told me it very well could be and then said that women my age can't expect their bodies to function 100%. He then gave me this muscle relaxant and sent me on my own feeble way. I'm 52 and he made me feel like I'm 102 and if what he says is true, I'm getting so old that my entire ear will be falling off completely in about 10 years. As I've said before, my experiences are something I DO NOT want to see you go through. Being passed around, paying a fortune for guess work, only to wind up still suffering. What kind of climate do you live in? My doctor also THOUGHT my problem might be caused because I spent the majority of my life in Illinois (a humid-ish) climate and for the past few years I live in the desert (Nevada). A couple more questions: does you ear click ONLY when you chew, talk or move your mouth? Mine does NOT. Like now, when I started typing my ear was really rolling and then it stopped completely and started up again. There are also times when it clicks a couple of times in regular intervals. It's like listening to a dripping faucet. Telling you that, I'm sure you understand-------I told the doctor that and he looked at me like I was crazy. When I originally signed onto this board, is was to inquire about this vitamin/herb type pill that is advertised to stop noises in the ear and lists clicking as one of them. To me that sounds too good to be true, so I wanted to see if anyone else had tried it. I didn't get a response, so I guess no one has. Hang in there and keep in touch. That website you suggested was great----thanks!!!

hey ariel-
i used to always think i had fluid in my ears too.. but doctors could never find it. so then i just look like im crazy haha. the clicking does usually happen when i yawn, swallow, or move my mouth.. but i feel like i can control that muscle or something and make it click if i wanted to (i can, but i dont ha).. i think the worst thing i have been dealing with is just the headaches. i take advil every other day.. but i feel like maybe i am becoming immune to it from taking it so much.
i dont know how to classify my climate.. but i have lived in va my whole life, its like hot summers and cold winters i guess? but nothing excessive
goodluck with everything and if you get help update us on your situation :)

I know Molly how you feel, having something going on with your body that you can't control. Aren't some doctors wonderful?? If yours only clicks when you yawn, swallow or move your mouth, then maybe it is your jaw. Mine clicks constantly, but gets worse when I move my mouth and sometimes certain noises (like water running), makes it worse. We can't both be crazy. You definitely live in a humid climate. Where do you suffer the most with your headaches------pain behind your eye(s), neck, etc. Sometimes the area can provide additional clues. The headaches I get are always behind my eye or eyes and the doctor said those are tension headaches, but he cannot seem to fathom the concept that my stupid ear clicking makes me TENSE. Will keep in touch and you do the same!!!! I'm looking at yet another trip to the doctor. I have to go to a doctor on base, but this time----I'm going to a FEMALE doctor on base. Hopefully she might be more understanding.
