Hi,

My MIL suffered from Ulcerative Colitis years ago and now she has it again, I felt so bad for her these past couple of days, she is on the toilet so much, I know how much pain she is in, she doesn't even want to go anywhere or do anything.

It all started when she started worrying about a couple of family members, beyond her control.

Now the diarrhea won't stop, she is taking some kind of licorice liquid stuff that her sister gave her, something that she took long ago when she had the colitis before, and she is taking some kind of pill, don't really know what it is called.

These are not working and I am so worried about her, I try not to worry too much either because when I worry, YES, I get the same way as my mother has Ulcerative Colitis, weird but true.

I told her that if this doesn't go away she better go to the doctor to get fixed before she dwindles away to nothing, this started almost 2 weeks ago and she has already lost 4 lbs, not good.

I am so angry that she worries so much and that she has put herself in this predicament, but I feel so bad that she is going through all of this.

Is there anything I can tell her to do until she gets an appt. for the doc?

There's not a whole lot. However, anti-D can help some. Watching the diet can help a little too.
If there is blood in the stool let the dr know. Also, you could go to a reg dr and let them prescibe the meds for U. C.

Hi.....tell her to stop any other preparations that are given to her by someone else. If it's liquorice stuff, it may encourage or irritate her colon more causing diarrhea.

Tell her to go to the doctor for sure. There are good meds such as 5ASA (Asacol, Salofalk, Rowasa...etc)

Metamucil Smooth (not the kind with aspartame) will help with the diarrhea by bulking up the stool. Follow directions for mixing, but don't take the chaser glass of water afterward. She can take up to 3 dosages a day..but only start with one a day for a few days and add if necessary.

What EXACTLY is the pill she's taking and what is the name of the preparation that was given to her?

Ihope she will call her doctor and get an appointment so that she can start some treatment.

Keep us posted
