I got off a short 4 month 40 mg course of accutane in July. 2 Months later, in September my hair fell out quite much. It lasted for like 3 weeks and ceased. My hair was left quite a bit thinner. I was told in 3-6 months it shall return. Over the months, I NEVER stopped thinking about my hair. NEVER. ALways looking in the mirror and comparing my hair to others. Now it's March, 8 months since I got off accutane and 6 months since my hair stopped falling out. Recently though, My hair seems to be coming out more than usual. I'm hoping that I just THINK it's coming out because I am obsessed and paranoid, so I don't know if it's falling out more than usual or If I just think it is. ANyways, my doctor said that my hair will come back and my derm says there is a 99% chance it will and it comes back in a year or so. Anyways, this hair loss has literally RUINED my year and I have very little hope for the future. I'm on Prozac and I want my old life back SO BAD!!! I WAS ONLY ON FOR 4 months on ONLY 40 mg. Is this high enough to permanantely damage my hair???? Thanks

The derms say the hair loss is temporary in most cases and returns after the Accutane is stopped. My nephew took Accutane for two weeks and the side effects such as itching dry skin were so bad he had to stop. He claimed the Accutane caused severe intestinal pain and itching rectum.

I have stopped accutane. I've been off for longer than I was on

I know hair loss can be associated with shock, and sometimes stress. It might help for you to relax about it, if that's possible.

Have you tried Rogaine or any of the Nioxin products? Did you take anything for possible hairloss when you started your treatment?

No I didn't. Only 1-2% of people experience hair loss! I WAS SO UNLUCKY! I am so worried my life is ruined. I need it to grow back. I NEED IT TO. I pray ALL THE TIME but nothing happens

I have a friend who is bipolar and right as she began starting Accutane she found this out, although it's not related to the topic as much as I would like, I felt it was important

In the last quarter of 1999, there were 2381 ADR reports for Accutane, 313 were serious - of these 89 were psychiatric, 44 2343 self injury, 5 attempted suicide, 5 completed suicide and 5 cases of psychosis.

Suicide and depression as possible side effects of the drug came to the attention of the FDA as early as February 1985 in which there was a case of suicide reported where the patient had no history of depression.

Hi,
I've never been on accutane, but my hair is thinning really bad and I don't know why (I'm 26 year old female).
I'm starting to get pretty anxious about it-it sucks.
Just wanted to say I feel your pain. Also, I just bought Nioxin products yesterday ($62!!!), so will let everyone know how it goes...

I would use Rogaine. It's a hair growth stimulant and should help jump start the follicles back into the growth phase. It has to be used continuosly, but I think it is a small price to pay for what it does.

BUT DOES ANYONE KNOW IF IT COMES BACK??? My docs say it will, but I want someone who;s gone through it to tell. HAve you heard anything? I don';t know how much longer this can go on

How long have you been on Prozac? I have heard and read that it can cause hair loss too.

Rogaine can help you.

I was on Prozac for about 3 years, and it caused hairloss for me. I was not sure at first, but I had blood work done and nothing else was wrong. My doc finally switched my meds, and the hairloss slowed down. I still lose hair, but it is more normal loss, not clumps like it was before. As for your hair to grow back, it took me about 2 years to get my hair back to almost normal after all the thinning from Prozac. I would definetly see about switching meds, since you had problems with the other med. You may be just like me and be that 1 or 2% who had the side effect.

GOOD LUCK.

Oh my goodness! When I read your post my heart dropped! I hope that the reason your on Prozac is not because of your hair loss. I hope that my story helps you out!!!
Well, this summer I went away to Europe for three months, In the second month, I started to notice my hair getting much more thinner( especially where the part is on top of my head). I didn't realize how bad it was until I saw myself in pictures. When I looked at these pictures my scalp was so visible at my hair line area. It was probably one inch of visible scalp, where the hair was very sparse. I almost started bawling when I saw it! By the end of my third month in Europe, I noticed that whenever I would run my hands through my hair, strands would come out, sometimes in bunches. I was so horrified and it began to control my life ( like you said, I compared myself to others, kept on looking at old pics of myself to compare, studied my scalp in the mirror etc..). When I got back to Canada, my mom noticed my hair right away. She told me that after I came out of the shower, the bathroom floor was full of hair. I felt sick to my stomach. I even noticed my hair brush getting filled with hair in like three days, where before it took a couple of weeks to fill up. Bright lights also horrified me! At this point, I Knew that I had to do something because I was starting to get depressed too.
I remembered that when my friend had a disease called Colitis, the doctor had put her on steroids. The steroids caused her hair to fall out and become much thinner. Her natureopath reccommended these vitamins called BIOFEN, that were specially designed, and highly recognized for treating people with thinning hair (due to illness, medication (accutane, steroids etc.), malnutrition etc..). She began using them, and the results were incredible. In three months her hair thickened back to its original state. Even her medical doctor was surprised! Well, I decided to take BIOFEN pills three months ago, and I have also seen an amazing improvement. I think my hair is even thicker now than before I started losing it this summer. I am so happy now. People keep asking me what I did. My boss even asked if I got extensions in my hair! Along with the BIOFEN pills, I also use BIOFEN shampoo and conditioner. It is good to combine the two.
I know that this must be a really crappy time right now. I can't imagine taking accutane to control acne and then having to deal with hair loss as well.! I have acne as well, so I'm in the same boat as you!! I would highly reccommend you purchase the BIOFEN pills. They are 100% natural and sold in health food stores. You can also find them online, but I suggest you buy them from the health food store. They are a little pricey, at $60US ( $80CND) for a one month supply, but sooooo worth the money. They are so popular that I sometimes have to pre-order them because they are always out of stock. I would avoid using any medicated hair treatments like, Rogaine because then you may become dependent on them. I think that these pills will help you so much. Plus, the shampoo and conditioner are not that expensive, about $6 each. I have been on the BIOFEN website but it does not give much info. I am totally rooting for you!! I hope that you get off the Prozac too. Please keep in touch, and if you have any questions I will answer them as best as I can. Take care, and remember it's called BIOFEN!!!

Thank you so much. It is hard and I'm only 17. Hopefully this is just a bad year. Now I;m reccomended to go On BIOFEN and BIOTIN. I do have a lot of hope though. I am the only one that notices my hair. It isn't THAT BAD. My doc and my derm both say IT WILL COME back, but it takes about a year. I'll keep everyone posted because I want to be a support for those who have the problem. Thanks everyone.

Question. How does the biotin help? If it makes your hair NOT fall out, wouldn't it fall out the day you don't take it? Or does it overall fix your hair until it grows in??

You're doc and derm are right. When you start any hairloss treatment there are two things to keep in mind.

A) Things will get worse before they get better
B) You need to go through with your program for about a year before deciding if it work's or not. Too many times people jump ship because they don't notice any differences or notice the situation getting worse.

They both said also that the hair comes back with or without help. HE said it HAS TO. It's almost impossible that it won't. That makes me feel better, but for some reason I just can beleive it. I'm so scared/

Don't waste your money on unproven treatments. Most likely the hair is going to grow in anyway, so save yourself some cash.

Give it more time. If you don't notice any new hair after a year, then use Rogaine. Dermatologists recommend using Rogaine to revive shrinking follicles.

I was on soriatane, which is very similar to accutane. I used to have hair to the middle of my back, lost most of it in the front, so I had it cut very short. I stopped the drug last august and my hair is about 2 inches now. About 98% is back, I still have a thin spot in front, but it looks alot better than it did.

Don't let something like this ruin your life, it will get better.

Is it true that it speeds up your natural hair loss? Does this mean that I'll be balder before I originally would have been?

im sure it will. try taking some biotin vitamins everyday, that really helps a lot. i took depo provera for 6 months and stopped b/c it made my hair thin really badly and i have fine/thin hair to begin with so i was freaking out. a year later my hair is still really thin and falls out like crazy in the shower, now i started accutane (like you, 40 mg a day and im on day 19 right now). im so worried about the hair loss as it has started already, but honestly i stress about it waaay more than i should. no one else notices but me and my shower drain lol
i think honestly that in our cases, stressing about it makes it fall out even more. im just trying to relax about it until i actually start getting bald spots, it's no biggie
so my suggestion is just to try to relax like me, maybe we can fix this by just stressing less :)
