My son, 18, is under a doctor's care and is getting off of avinza, slowly. Today he is experiencing withdrawal symptoms, and while I am not seeking medical advice (the doctor is doing a good job), I'm wondering if there are any natural remedies, home remedies, foods, drinks, etc., that can help during this process.
Thank you.

Hello,

This is a board for pain patients who need medication. The addiction board should have people who have experience with withdrawal. Perhaps they will be more help.

Has his doctor prescribed Valium to help with the anxiety? If not, there is an herb which is a natural relaxant similar to valium.

I found several abstracts on the Medline about the herb called Passion Flower (passiflora extract). The scientific and medical research articles said that the herb taken along with clonidine was superior to clonidine alone in the management of the mental symptoms of withdrawal. The fixed daily dose was 60 drops of passiflora extract and a maximum daily dose of 0.8 mg of clonidine administered in three divided doses.

I have taken Passion Flower for anxiety and found it to be beneficial, without extra sedating effects. You can buy it at a health food store. Buy the liquid drops, and put them in water. The brand I like is called Gaia, and it is alcohol-free.

How wonderful that you are supporting your son in his time of need.

There are lots of other patients in here who have experienced withdrawal, myself for one. Unfortunately I can't help with the herb part of it but I'm sure someone on here can give you some advice. Most are, but not everyone in here is, on opiates. Things are usually quieter in here on a weekend so don't lose heart if your post isn't answered right away. I hope you find what you're looking for to help your son.

hi i took avinza myself but no longer take it or any opiates except the occasional lortab as needed but it was horrible to come off of. it took me about 3 days to get it out of my system and i didn't eat or anything. just make sure he drinks plenty of gatorade or something because i'm sure he's got diarhea as i did because the morphine was so incredibly painfully constipating for me. i would probably talk to his dr and see if he could be bumped down to a lighter narcotic to help wean him. i took the 120's for a good while so i know how miserable he is but the dr gave me some tylenol 3's to take only at night to help me rest. i do feel for your son i'm 25 years old myself and unfortunately due to a really painful thoracotomy have to deal with intercostal nerve damage but have chosen to quit narcotics and just try neurontin on a low dose. i wish him best of luck and try to get him to exercise some if he can me and my wife went to the park and just casually walked around and i think that helped me some too.
