Im new to the allergy forum. I am wanting to know if a doctor can draw blood to test for allergys to antibiotics. After going into shock from Ceclor. I need to know if I have developed any allergys to others. Also are there over the counter allergy test for food allergies? I live in a small town and have to travel for specialist. I appreciate any replys. suem

regarding food allergies - my GP ordered a test for food allergies. They test for 90 different intolerances.. it had to be sent to some place out west so they could run the test :\ cost me $185 bucks but that was because my insurance didn't cover it.

I'm not sure about antibiotics - though I'd be curious to have it done as well.. The only thing we've found I don't have a reaction to are sulfa drugs, and they don't work the best.

Hi,

I had allergy testing for Penicillin, Cipro, and Biaxin. There is a blood test for the Penicillin. The Cipro and Biaxin was done differently. They took a pill of each, crushed it, mixed it with something (water, maybe?), and rubbed it into my skin. These came back negative, but the allergist cautioned me that just because you don't have a reaction to the skin testing doesn't necessarily mean that you are 100% NOT allergic -- you could still have a reaction if you ingest it.

Are you allergic to Penicillin? A lot of people who are allergic to Penicillin can't take Ceclor, either.

Hope you're feeling better....Let us know how they do the testing.

IRYS AND Inquirer,
Thank You so much for your replys and Thank You for caring. I do avoid Penicillins also. I have in the past crushed a pill and mixed with water and rubbed it into my skin. I did that with zithromax but also got a mild rash on my neck after starting it. It just makes you very cautious about being around any one with infections. I never want to have another reaction. It was horrible and is now logged in my memory. I have other conditions to be dealt with and then I hope to have some test. Ill let you know what they do.
Thank You suem
