My Gyn recently found atypical vessels in a colposcopy. They came back as non-cancerous. But, everything I am reading seems to indicate that atypical vessels mean cancer. I asked my gyn what the difference between atypcial cells and vessels mean etc. and she gave an unclear answer or rather no answer to that question at all. She said that the importnant thing is that it came back as no cancer. Does anyone have any information on this?

Hi tliebman...i've been doing some reading on atypical vessels and although I don't want to worry you I would agree with what you've been reading. Atypical vessels seem to be a sign of cervical cancer...these are not present in cervical dysplasia. The fact that your doctor can't even answer your question makes me question her competence. With her knowledge and expertise she should be more concerned and curious of your situation and do some additonal investigating. If I were you i'd get a second opinion. It could very well be you don't have cancer, and I certainly hope you don't, but it could be some other type of condition that also needs to be treated, not simply ignored because the biopsy came back negative. Do you think you could find another doctor for a second opinion? Good luck and keep us posted :)

HI, thanks so much for responding. I went back to the doctor and she said that vessels become atypical from anything, for instance if you bruise yourself on your arm etc. and that she has to check if anything is at all suspicious even a little bit. I will be getting pap smears every 3 months until it goes back to a normal pap smear. But, a second opinion isn't a bad idea.
