Hi, I need help before I drive myself insane. The other day we were taking pulses in class (nursing student) and mine was 110 Beats per minute. I didnt think anything was wrong until I started reading that over 100 is bad. So i have been checking like mad..when i first wake up its 90 something then over the course of the day it ends up between 105 and 111. I'm very nervous about this, which of course is making my heart beat even faster. Should I be really concerned?? Should I be going to the doctor ASAP?
Thanks

Well, I can't decide for you if you should go ASAP, but I would if it were me. My heart rate is also high (about like yours) and they discovered last year that I have a Mitral Valve Prolapse w/regurge. This can be discovered through a simple (and painless!) test called an echocardiogram, which is an ultrasound of the heart. Do you have any other symptoms? My others include; dizziness at times, palpitations, and a feeling of being out of breath. MVP is not life threatening, but should be diagnosed and treated depending on how mild or severe it is. I take beta blockers which slow the heart rate (i am now usually at a 55 on average). Simply put, they block the stress hormone from affecting the heart. Also, MVP is found most commonly in women, young and old. I am 29 and thin and otherwise fairly healthy.....so the docs were surprised to find anything...they wanted to treat me for anxiety. SO, if you are worried, go to the doc. It can't hurt! Request some tests though or they might just tell you that you are anxious, or too young, or blah blah blah! lol....let me know if i can help in any other way! Good luck! Lil'Pea

Hi Reki -
I am going through the same thing right now and I understand your anxiousness. Don't worry you will be fine. Maybe it can be fixed and maybe it can't but there are medications out there (beta-blockeres) that do help. Of course you should see a cardiologist if you feel you need to see any doctor about this and if you can find a Heart Rhythm Specialist that would be best.
Read my post below titled Rapid Heart Beat and Toporol and Scared. It just may help you get some answers.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Good luck!
Hi, Thanks for responding. I have absolutely no other symptoms at all. I have even been exersicing on my exersice bike because I thought I just might be out of shape and that doesnt bother me either. But something has to be wrong because my heart just shouldn't beat this fast. Thanks for the advice. Monday I am going to make an appointment with my doctor. Now I just need to calm down! Oh I have been drinking a lot of energy drinks and coffee lately to keep up with classes. I have since stopped because I'm sure its making my heart rate even faster but it doesn't seem to be helping.
